About this listen

Nestled in the small village of Ringwood is a peculiar shop that sells the souls of the departed.

In life, Quill never stood up for himself or broke the rules, not even when it really mattered. Now, as the two-hundred-year-old proprietor, he dutifully matches each customer with the perfect soul—so long as they can pay the price and are willing to sign the contract.

When Erin’s soul arrives at the shop, it becomes clear that she’s more than just inventory. Somehow, she’s able to maintain a connection to the living world. Quill takes Erin on as his apprentice, hoping to understand her mysterious abilities. But digging too deep will mean breaking the rules, and if The Boss finds out, someone’s going to pay with their very soul.

Will Quill be able to do what he never could in life, or will he stay forever bound by the rules that have always restrained him?

Thank you to the author for this gifted ALC. All thoughts are completely my own.

This book deserves all the love 🫶 It's a cosy, comforting read that blends the quiet mystery of a small English village with the afterlife, found family, and second chances. I loved the slower pace, the introspective tone, and how deeply character-driven it was.

The story follows Quill Darlington, who's been running a shop selling souls of the departed for over 200 years. He’s tired, going through the motions until one day, a soul named Erin shows up and changes everything. There's something different about her, and Quill starts to care again. About her, the rules, and maybe even himself.

The book is told in multiple POVs, it’s easy to follow, with each chapter labeled by character. Jack Jacobs did an amazing job. The voices are distinct without being over-the-top, and the whole thing feels really immersive.

I felt a bit soppy by the end (almost cried 🥲). I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters. If you liked The Ghost Cat, Under the Whispering Door, or The Five People You Meet in Heaven, I think this will be right up your alley.

It’s a short read/listen. Perfect as a palate cleanser between heavy reads or when you want something warm and a little whimsical.

This is an interesting tale of Quill, the keeper of The Ghost Merchant, as he breaks centuries of solitude to take on an apprentice. Erin is a newly-deceased ghost and there's something different about her. Straight away, I was invested in finding out what that was and how it would affect her future.

Although a ghost story touching on darker themes, it gently pushes the need for self-forgiveness and letting friendship and love shine through, doing whats right for more than yourself, so I'd describe this book as a cosy fantasy.

It was a quick read (or listen, I was lucky enough to receive an ARC audiobook) and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys ghost stories with interesting, well-written characters, and a quirky premise for the afterlife. There's scope here for more as some of the details of how/why weren't explored - either with the same shop or another of the merchant outlets if the author ever wanted to.

I loved the character of Erin and the overall story. The author made me feel empathy for her as she finds herself trapped in the afterlife after dying too young. But she learns to make the most of a bad situation and to find some meaning in her afterlife.

I also enjoyed finding out more about Quill, but would have liked to see more of his backstory sooner.

The overall concept reminded me a little of two of my favourite TV Shows - Ghoster Whisperer, and Doll House.

I rate this 4.5, but have rounded it up to 5 stars.

Fun story and relatable characters

The narration in this audiobook was excellent, he really brought the characters to life. The characters themselves are fleshed out (excuse the pun) and likeable and the concept was really interesting. I'm hopeful that there might be a sequel in the works. I feel like some of the heavier themes were handled with nuance and respect and while at times I felt the pacing was a little strange overall I enjoyed listening and would happily recommend it to friends.

A life affirming story about what happens after death.
