About this listen
Named a Guardian Best Audiobook of 2020, this optimistic and agenda-setting look at the climate crisis is perfect for listeners of Rutger Bregman and Yuval Noah Harari.
We can survive the climate crisis. This book tells us how.
Practical, optimistic and empowering, The Future We Choose is a book for every generation, for all of us who feel powerless in the face of the climate crisis.
We have two choices for our future, which is still unwritten. It will be shaped by who we choose to be right now. So, how can we change the story of the world?
The Future We Choose is a passionate call to arms from former UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, and Tom Rivett-Carnac, senior political strategist for the Paris Agreement. We are still able to stave off the worst and manage the long-term effects of climate change, but we have to act now. We know what we need to do, and we have everything we need to do it.
This is the final hour: it can be our finest.
But we must act now.

A book to bring about stubborn optimism!

Combined all of these things did leave me with a sense of optimism. This is with my own carbon impact and influence. While also a general appreciation for the global efforts of countries to reduce carbon emissions.
About halfway through I was still quite confused about where this book was leading. I think the story could’ve been better told throughout the middle of the book.
To be honest, I expected more from Penguin, as this sounded like an amalgamation of podcast topics rather than a successful climate writer.

this isnt just another book describing how bad climate change is. It outlines 2 (the only 2) possible scenarios: a pessimistic one, where we take no further action to mitigate climate change and face disaster after disaster, and an optinistic one, in which we do all we can to combat climate change.
a few things really jumped out at me:
• this book addresses the threat climate change poses to the social fabric of humanity, such as the increasing njmber of climate refugees being used by far right extremists to promote racist and nationalist ideas. But it also highlights how the actions we can take to combat climate change could improve the way we connect and relate to each other, and produce a happier, healthier society
•it addresses the element in the room of climate change: meat and dairy. These both have a MASSIVE environmental impact, 10s to 100s of times more than the equivalent plant food. Any discussion of climate change and ways to combat it that doesnt mention these is a pointless one, not least because its the single action most of us can take which has the biggest impact. Going plant based, or massively reducing meat intake, has never been easier
•likewise it addressed the textile industry and fast fashion. These also have a HUGE impact, with an easy solution to most of us: just buy less clothes
•they rightly discuss the importance of tree planting and reforestation, but highlight why this alone isnt enough. Theres an unfortunate tendency for people to overstate the power of tree planting
strong advice for an existential threat
