About this listen

Marion Sharpe and her mother seem an unlikely duo to be found on the wrong side of the law. Quiet and ordinary, they have led a peaceful and unremarkable life at their country home, The Franchise. Unremarkable that is, until the police turn up with a demure young woman on their doorstep.

Not only does Betty Kane accuse them of kidnap and abuse, she can back up her claim with a detailed description of the attic room in which she was kept, right down to the crack in its round window. But there’s something about Betty Kane’s story that doesn’t quite add up.

Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard is stumped. It takes Robert Blair, solicitor turned amateur detective, to solve the mystery...

But none the worse for that. Loved this book, extreme!y well narrated by Carole Boyd. Quite forgotten how good Josephine Tey was and, indeed, Carole Boyd. Read Tey when I was much younger and loved her books then. Really good stories with robust characters.

Good ,Slightly Old fashion Story

I listen to this over and over. Why can't all audiobooks be narrated by Carol Boyd?

Great story and brilliant narrator

My first experience of Josephine Tey, but I look forward to hearing her others.
An interesting story, not so much a who dunnit, as a how dunnit. The story line keeps twisting nicely. A good listen.

Just kept listening…

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Franchise Affair?

So well written and exciting. You're not quite sure how it will conclude, really quite tense. I really enjoyed the book. Ingenious story line.

What about Carole Boyd’s performance did you like?

Carole Boyd's voice is a pleasure to listen to. She reads the story very well.

Fabulous whodunnit!

I love Josephine Tey so I may be biased but I heartily recommend this audio book. Brilliantly written of course and wonderfully read by Carole Boyd. Didn't want to stop listening.

Brilliant

Really enjoy classic crime with decent characters and bags of period detail. This book had all that. It also has a cracking plot.

Loved it.

Josephine Tey was an amazing writer, and her characters are fully human and still credible today.
Oddly enough, after being hooked all the way through, I felt the final scene did not fit, and that Marion's summary on the golf course had been perfectly right. I'm still puzzling about that. But I will happily listen to it all again. It is wonderful.
(But please lose the guy wrecking the mood by shouting 'That was' at the end.)

Superb

I am a huge fan of Josephine Tey and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this great book. The narrator is superb. Perfect for the story. I do hope she narrates more of this author’s books.

Wonderful writing.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the (very few) books that I can read or listen to, again and again at intervals over the years, and find the same enjoyment each time.

A favourite story, with excellent narration
