Summary

A guide to help support women through post-partum healing on the physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual levels.

This holistic guide offers practical advice to support women through postpartum healing on the physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual levels - and provides women with a roadmap to this very important transition that can last from a few months to a few years.

Kimberly Ann Johnson draws from her vast professional experience as a doula, postpartum consultant, yoga teacher, body worker, and women's health care advocate, and from the healing traditions of Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, and herbalism - as well as her own personal experience - to cover:

  • how you can prepare your body for birth;
  • how you can organize yourself and your household for the best possible transition to motherhood;
  • simple practices and home remedies to facilitate healing and restore energy;
  • how to strengthen relationships and aid the return to sex;
  • learning to exercise safely postpartum;
  • carrying your baby with comfort;
  • exploring the complex and often conflicting emotions that arise postpartum;
  • and much more.

I wish I'd read this before I gave birth

Lots of great info and encouragement for new mothers. I was so prepared for I will attend in person of my child but not for me as a mother. This book would have helped ALOT. Rather late than never though.

Very insightful and practical

This book has been recommended to me by a number of people I respect and follow and I am really grateful for it. Also slightly surprised and shocked to see negative reviews regarding the voiceover and content - so much judgment!

The book is an excellent source of HONEST and CANDID information on postpartum including all the changes that happen to our body. A lot of the topics aren't widely covered in friendly conversations and often arent addressed by our ob-gyn so I think it is a great tool to help women to prepare for what's happening during and after birth and make sure they have done all the work necessary to minimise their birth trauma and its consequences

It also comes with a number of additional resources to work on lone and with a partner which again, I found incredibly useful as I was just going into parenthood 'winging it'.

A must have for pregnancy and beyond

A very reflective book which helps you look inside at yourself, your family, support and the parent you want to be. I read this after my second baby and wish I had read it sooner- a fantastic way to reflect on yourself, your experiences and seek support where needed.

Life-changing

There are those books (or audiobooks) which have the power to change the course of your life. This is one of those books. Written and spoken with heart, with credible information and clear expertise, this is a must-have for any mum to be. Being pregnant myself, this book has aided me in thinking and feeling my way into a better pregnancy and (hopefully) postpartum period, with more confidence and strength to resource what I need at this time.

I have to say, listening to it at first, it was pretty hard-hitting. Kimberley is very clear about the sort of needs and support that a mum should try to have in place, in what is often spoken about in a mysterious, daunting and vague period of afterbirth. She sheds light on how important this time is and for me, she is a powerful voice in society for women, especially when this is not really spoken about until you get to the point of giving birth.

Great book, trouble with content

The book is eye-opening, I highly recommend it. Even though her personal experience was tough to listen to, I believe it prepares you for anything that postpartum might bring. Very empowering too.
However, I have trouble finding the PDF she mentions even though it should be in my library after I purchased the title. Anyone else had the same issue?

Interesting but not for me

I found the book hard to finish. Some information is interesting, especially the references to different cultural traditions regarding postpartum but I found it hard to relate since it seems to focus on the traumatic experience of birth and postpartum. The practices explained in the book are complex and seem time consuming. Hard to put in practice during a time when even taking a shower is hard.

Couldn’t finish it due to narrator

The content may have been fantastic but unfortunately I just could not concentrate past the irritating voice of the narrator.

Unfortunate choice of narrator

I’ve been excited about this book after many great reviews but I couldn’t bear listening to the disharmonious voice, so I had to abort after only 10 minutes.

Negative and fearmongering

I got about 1/3 of the way through this book whilst 8.5 months pregnant and had to give up after it started giving me bad dreams about my upcoming birth. It’s full of negative stories of what a trauma birth is on the body and how some women take years to or never recover. I’ve been following hypnobirthing and this is the complete opposite of the positive and empowering experience that gives you. Maybe it gets better, but I’m not prepared to continue listening to find out.
