About this listen

From Boston Globe-Horn Book Award winner Katherine Rundell comes an exciting new novel about a group of kids who must survive in the Amazon after their plane crashes.

Fred, Con, Lila, and Max are on their way back to England from Manaus when the plane they're on crashes and the pilot dies upon landing. For days they survive alone, until Fred finds a map that leads them to a ruined city, and to a secret.

Critic reviews

"An exhilarating and sometimes harrowing old-fashioned adventure that comes beautifully, vibrantly alive on audio. Narrator Peter Noble is utterly convincing as Fred, Con, Lila, and, especially, 5-year-old Max.... Listeners will be riveted, breathless, until the very end." (AudioFile)

For Young Adult or Not, Grab this Book

I wish this novel was available when I was teaching. That is my only regret about this astonishing, spell-binding, touching, frightening, tear making, moral, loving, exploring, courageous, challenging, truth-spotlighting, powerful listen (or read). Katherine Rundell is right; children’s literature is not just for young people, but is for all who are moved to take this audio-book to them. I access the Audible plus version and it was top quality with a performer who had unquestioning skill in making the characters live. His ‘Explorer’ voice is one of the best creations I have heard on audio-book. There may be some that there are inflections of a colonial tinge to the book, but the novel breaks out and away from that perspective. Those with heart will witness many light-bulb moments as Rundell repeatedly explores what it is to be human, of any age and the capacity to change. Hard on the back of this I have added two more novels by this gifted author to my Audible library. I urge all and anyone to experience the remarkable journeys of ‘The Explorer’. There is nothing to disappoint

AMAZING

I loved that Fred flew back to the hospital to get some treatment for Max.
It was a bit frightening when the guy came up to them and scared Max until he cried. But other than that, the overall story was absolutely outstanding, astounding and astonishing.

Great stuff

I really liked the storyline, but was especially interested in the information shared.
The individual characters were beautifully drawn and significantly different and interesting.
Although there were strong moral lessons being taught it was never heavy going, just genuinely introduced. The narrator was great.
