About this listen

Hitler is dead. A new threat is born... The brand-new blockbuster from 'the master of the wartime thriller' (FT)

Autumn 1945 - Off the east coast of England, a Japanese sub surfaces, unloads its mysterious cargo, then blows itself to pieces.

Former spy Professor Tom Wilde is enjoying peacetime in Cambridge, settling back into teaching and family life. Until a call from senior MI5 boss Lord Templeman brings him out of retirement.

A nearby village has been locked down by the military, its residents blighted by a deadly illness. No one is allowed in or out.

There are rumours the Nazi machine is still operational, with links to Unit 731, a notorious Japanese biological warfare research laboratory. But how could they possibly be plotting on British soil—and why?

What's more, Wilde and Templeman's names are discovered on a Gestapo kill list. And after a series of assassinations an unthinkable question emerges: could an Englishman be behind the plot?

Interesting premise. A few twists. Odd pacing of significant events that are often over in less than a minute. But a good story nonetheless.

A decent story

I don't usually like WW2 stories but this was a quite fun. Good performance

Gripping story, good performance

I’ve listened to each of these books in the series and each one detached further and further from historical reality. Does that matter? No - historical gobbledygook? Yes? Fun - certainly. Hope there’s a book 8

Historical gobbledygook

Having enjoyed the series this book seemed a little far fetched or was it? It could have been! The history of fascism before/after the second World War is seldom told. If true I wasn't aware of the fascist movement in the USA.
The pace of delivery and accents by the reader was good, as it has been through the series. Lots of red herrings as there should be!
A good listen.

Interesting slice of history

Great stories 👍🏻

Fantastic narration by Adam Sims.
The clipped dialogue and cultural references creates a wonderful 30’s and 40’s vibe.
I love the Tom Wilde series and this one is up there with “The man in the bunker” as the best yet.
Thoroughly recommended.

Gripping

I think this is my 6th Tom Wilde book by Rory Clements and again it has not disappointed. If you like modern historical tales, with heroes, villains, fantastic storylines and a superb performance by Adam Sims, then this is the book for you!

It’s just a joy to listen to, with great characters, some from previous books, and a plot which keeps you hooked right from the start.

A very definite recommendation!

I can’t recommend this series enough. I just love the stories and how the author brings together a simple, but fast paced thriller. More of Tom and Lydia Wilde please
