About this listen

You should never speak truth to power…

The Galactic Empire is dying and chaos and anarchy are breaking out everywhere. After a disastrous mission against terrorists on Earth itself, Captain Edward Stalker of the Terran Marine Corps makes the mistake of speaking truth to power, telling one of the most powerful men in the Empire a few home truths. As a result, Captain Stalker and his men are unceremoniously exiled to Avalon, a world right on the Rim of the Empire. It should have been an easy posting...

Well, apart from the bandits infesting the countryside, an insurgency that threatens to topple the Empire's loose control over Avalon, and a corrupt civil government more interested in what it can extort from the population than fighting a war. The Marines rapidly find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of political and economic chaos, fighting to preserve Avalon before the competing factions tear the world apart. They're Marines; if anyone can do it, they can.

The battle to save the Empire starts here.

Very good but...

Very good performance by the narrator. The story is basically 5 star but slips up slightly in some places at least in my opinion so it's more like a 4.9 stars. Good audiobook looking forward to listening to the next one.

A good read

This follows what is becoming a standard story in sci-fi. A band of good people are sent out to the end of the Galaxy after a mistake and build their own world.
This was a good read and I am looking forwards to getting the next in the set but there will not be any surprises for anyone in it.
As for what some of the other reviews called excessive swearing - there is a very little amount - a couple of words - far less than I would have expected for a story about marines. There is a little talk of rape and the like in the book and brief talk about sex some wouldn't recommend listening upon front of children.

I very much enjoyed this book, the only advert come to l have,to much of how invincible the marines are.Having served 15years I think a little humanity is needed.Still I give it 5.

Good Start

This promises to be a good, all guns blazing, sci-fi series. Fortunately, I am a bit behind on the books in the series, so I do not have o wait before the second instalment.

Predictable but still enjoyable book. Well read.

I'll admit it, I liked the Ark Royal series. I liked the way it was read, I liked the way it took the view the US weren't the only major powers in space, and I liked the way it ran.

Now we have a new series by Christopher G Nuttell. At first it seems to be in the same universe, just further along in time, but soon you realise that is not the case. He's essentially borrowed the universe from the other series but with a few changes.

The plot is basic, it's obvious, but it works well. It is paced well and while you can guess what's going to happen, that does not reflect badly on it. The characters work, not totally believable, but not over the top either, it's more pulp sci fi.

The only thing to be aware of is that Nuttell does not understand army ranks, as he continues his mistake from the Ark Royal series by having a corporal as senior to a sergeant. AT first this can confuse the listener, but you get used to it.

Great Sci-fi

Would you consider the audio edition of The Empire's Corps to be better than the print version?

Narration was excellent. Gave a different dimension to the story

Would you recommend The Empire's Corps to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, its not literature but an intriguing story set in a future that appears all too true. Very gung ho.

Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

no

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It encouraged me to return to sci-fi as a great storytelling genre.

Any additional comments?

This is great book in the genre of rip roaring adventure with bad guys, good guys and some misunderstood guys. The good guys are tough but fair. The bad guys are despicable and deserve their fate. The misunderstoods will see the light in the end.

Good story,

Good yarn, but took a while to get used to narrator. I liked the universe the author created, and the cast of characters. it will be interesting to see if he manages to fill It out in the rest of the series.
