Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell, read by Sean Barrett.

Sweden, winter, 1991. Inspector Kurt Wallander and his team receive an anonymous tip-off. A few days later a life raft is washed up on a beach. In it are two men, dressed in expensive suits, shot dead.

The dead men were criminals, victims of what seems to have been a gangland hit. But what appears to be an open-and-shut case soon takes on a far more sinister aspect. Wallander travels across the Baltic Sea, to Riga in Latvia, where he is plunged into a frozen, alien world of police surveillance, scarcely veiled threats and lies.

Doomed always to be one step behind the shadowy figures he pursues, only Wallander's obstinate desire to see that justice is done brings the truth to light.

Great start to the Wallander series of books

As the first of the series of books featuring inspector Wallander, Mankell introduces us to many of the characters that feature in future books. The narration is really good, and I have heard Sean Barrett reading other Scandinavian novels also to great effect.
The story features an interesting time, and though a bit escapist at times, is an interesting and enjoyable listen throughout.
If you are a Wallander/Mankell fan, or a Euro Crime Fan, this has a great feel and is worth the purchase.

Dogs of Riga

I found this story too predictable but enjoyed it nevertheless. The detail of Riga was exceptional. worth the read.

Wonderful book

Both the author and the narrator did an excellent job. Wallander is a great character and brought to life.

Great book

Great story. Sean Barrett’s performance is well suited to the book. I’ll be working my way through the series.

Good story but ending over dramatised

A gripping story, well read, with building tension, but the final chapters are a bit over the top without a plausible explanation of some of the narrative events. The residual tape pauses are annoying and could be deleted easily - so why haven't they been?

Mystery until the last chapter

As usual Henning Mankell kept the reader guessing until the last chapter, having lured the reader in the wrong direction.

A great read

Narration was excellent. It’s not my favourite Wallander case but Menkell describes Riga so well.

Gripping

I can see that after listening to the first two books in the series I will listen to them all.
This seemed more assured than the first and was very good indeed,
