Summary

Fortunes rise and fall in Wilbur Smith's tale of warring siblings and illegal diamond trading, The Diamond Hunters.

'The jet was a solid 18-inch column, a pillar of brown mud and yellow gravel and sea water that beat against the steel plates of the hull with a hollow drumming roar. In the few seconds since the explosion the cyclone was already half filled with a slimy shifting porridge that rushed from wall to wall with the movement of the ship. It was like some monstrous jellyfish which each second gathered weight and strength.'

The Van Der Byl Diamond Company, willed by its founder to his son Benedict, his sister Tracey and their estranged foster brother Johnny Lance, turns out to be a bequest of hatred. For it is couched in such terms as to offer Benedict the instrument of destruction of his bitterest rival. 'Destroy Johnny' is the old man's implacable message. And so, consumed with envy for Johnny, Benedict sets out in ruthless pursuit of this goal - and Johnny is plunged into a maelstrom of greed, vengeance and murder....

Nice lightweight read

Well read by the narrator.
Good book with plenty of twists and turns. Wilbur smith as ever has a great way of describing and telling stories.
The diamond mining process comes to life in this book.

Great as far as it went.

Another winner by Wilbur Smith, the story started well, developed to a pitch but then ended very abruptly which was disappointing. I was hoping this was in preparation for a sequel but unhappily not the case.

Great stuff

Classic Smith and an easy listen. His stand alone books are all worth reads! Recommended

Disappointing ending!!!

Great story but the ending was a bit more abrupt than expected - maybe there’s a sequel?

You can tell Wilbur Smith was not the author

it's a good book but far less exciting and not as well written. The plot is relatively weak and the heroes not as convincing. Still worth a listen if you are a fan.

Predictable and only saved by Geology

I have to be one of Wilbur Smith's biggest fans. I have read and re-read every book he wrote and had co-written. This is probably one of the worst and I got it on audio just to be sure.

The story line is weak and predictable from start to finish. You know who the baddy will be, you know what will happen with and to the baddy and you really don't care.

The interesting part, hence the 2* review, is the diamond classifications and detail - well researched and very interesting. To a degree.

I'd have returned this hoping to get my credit back but because I knew it wasn't great before hand, I don't believe that would be fair.
