About this listen

'Truth is the Daughter of Time' is an old proverb. And The Daughter of Time is Josephine Tey's search for the truth about the murder of the Princes in the Tower. Was the hunchback, Richard III, the monster that Shakespeare and the history books have made him out to be? With real brilliance she conducts her search in the form of a crime novel, and her investigator is none other than her famous detective, Inspector Alan Grant, who starts to examine the centuries-old scandal.

I had read all Ms Tey's books bar this one. I had put it off, thinking oh I am not that interested in the murder of the Princes, what a mistake. I listened to it straight through.

Derek Jacobi reads superbly. The story is gripping and past paced, showing the twists and turns of uncovering the truth, with interesting characters and observations about vested interests and bias and reputation along the way as temporarily bedbound Inspector Grant and his offsiders put the pieces together.

I don’t know why this book has its title.

Strange Title

Unexpectedly good; the excellent narration by Derek Jacobi kept me riveted. The time flew past.

One wonders how much of the history we're taught is false.

Fasinating

Simply a great, must read novel.
Probably one of the greatest and most compelling works of detective fiction ever written.

I love this book, I also have a great fondness for Josephine Rey's work. Try for yourself if you haven't read anything by her in the past.

brilliant

I loved this book, read it many moons ago so when it popped up in the audible sale I snapped it up. Jacobi narrates the story well which is an interesting historical murder mystery, who killed the Princes in the Tower. Highly recommended if you like a light take on historical facts.

An old fashioned murder mystery with a twist

Good characters that paint the setting for an academic romp through the skullduggery of Royalty in Plantagenet/ Tudor cross over - loved it

Mystery, History - fabulous

Could there be a better combination- and, despite being written in 1951, bar the initial chapters perhaps, it doesn’t feel dated at all, particularly with recent historical revision concerning the Princes. A great listen!

History & Mystery

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story. The storyline was very well put together and was very thought-provoking.
David Jacobi brought the characters to life ,he is such a great actor .
I would highly recommend it

Daughter of our Time

It was a very different sort of history story. As I'm trying to write an actual history book at the moment I could empathise with the characters, 'real people' not history dons. The message was clear to me - history is for everyone. We can all ask questions and doubt sources. Most of all it doesn't have to be dull.

A liberating view of history
