About this listen

The entertaining, moving and unpredictable new thriller from multi-award-winning best seller Chris Brookmyre is a wholly original masterpiece.

Millie Spark can kill anyone.

A special effects make-up artist, her talent is to create realistic scenes of bloody violence.

Then, one day, she wakes to find her lover dead in her bed.

Twenty-five years later, her sentence for murder served, Millicent is ready to give up on her broken life - until she meets troubled film student and reluctant petty thief Jerry.

Together, they begin to discover that all was not what it seemed on that fateful night...and someone doesn't want them to find out why.

Chris Brookmyre was a journalist before becoming a full-time novelist with the publication of his award-winning debut Quite Ugly One Morning, which established him as one of Britain's leading crime novelists. His 2016 novel Black Widow won both the McIlvanney Prize and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award. Brookmyre's novels novels have sold more than two million copies in the UK alone.

Don't believe what you see

It's a good idea, can you trust what you see on the screen, it's all effects right? What about in real life can you trust that, of course you can, until someone turns your own skills against you. It's a good story that looks at one person trying to make sense of one moment in their life that saw them jailed for murder. Nothing about the past is quite what it seemed, it's a search for the truth, secrets are uncovered, lies exposed and friendships questioned. Just make sure you pay attention to what happens in the past, it really does help with the "why" of the story.

Great story, well performed

I read this book in one weekend last year and throughly enjoyed it so when I spotted the Audible version I decided to revisit it after listening to the sample to ensure I liked the narration.
Eilidh Beaton did an excellent job of bringing Millicent and Jerome to life along with all the other characters, each getting a distinct and appropriate voice.
Definitely one of my favourite Chris Brookmyre's of recent years and an excellent standalone away from any of his recurring characters.

Great

The Cut has a refreshing story line and was at times clever and humorous. Enjoyed this very much. Worth a read.

Gripping with twists and turns

Chris B is an expert at keeping you guessing right to the end. Just when you think you know what went on, there’s another twist……

It's got the lot

Loved this book. Like other Brookmyres, it begins with a slow burn, and a sense of lots of disparate threads, which allow you to get to know, and really care about, the characters. Millicent and Jerry are an unlikely pair, and intially both fairly unsympathetic, but chapter by chapter you are drawn into their story and are really rooting forn them by the end. The plot is a bit far-fetched, but all the ends are tied up satisfactorily, and woven into the narrative is that great Glaswegian humour that Brookmyre is a master of, even in the darkest situations.
The narrator did a great job with a range of accents, which made following the threads easy (not sure about the pronunciation of all the place names but as a southerner, who am I to quibble about how you say Sauchiehall Street.

Another great book from Brookmyre

Loved the book, but the narrator needs to learn Scottish pronunciation, as it was very distracting.

Original, well-paced and entertaining.

Loved this title! I often have small criticisms but in this case it's only of the strap line on the cover which I kept trying to connect to the story but failed. 'The tape convicted her...' erm,.... no. Who? When????

Anyway, gripping story after first few chapters (bear with it) and laugh out loud moments I didn't expect. Beautifully researched and written, really well paced, lots of well drawn characters and a trip around Europe. I shall be purchasing more from this author.

I have read some criticism of the narrator and am frankly baffled. At times I actually forgot that it was only one person as each character is so easily identified. To achieve this in itself is remarkable but then to have to include so many accents leaves me in awe. Well done Eilidh and I'll look forward to hearing you again.

Best book I've had this year. Highly recommended.

Chris is on form with this book.

A great story which dives into the 1990s world of cult horror movies and the European movie industry back then.
As an avid follower of the various stories Chris Brookmyre has produced over the years this follows in the footsteps of some of his best, early work. Maybe not as humorous, but still written with a quick wit, bags of detail and with an ability to want you to keep on reading. Great plot and also well read by the narrator, Eilidh. Good work all round... Keep up the good work.

Good plot twists

Lovely to have an elderly female lead. Maybe a few too many coincidences, but plot flowed well.
