Summary

"A piece of perfect storytelling." (Robert Louis Stevenson)

Trust. Betrayal. Revenge. The Count of Monte Cristo is the quintessential masterpiece of Alexandre Dumas. In Edmond Dantes we find an early materialization of the modern superhero. He is a dashing young sailor imprisoned unjustly for treason. While in prison he meets a holy man who imparts to him all his wisdom of languages, philosophy, science, and literature. The "abbe" also divulges the profound secret of a hidden treasure. Dantes realizes that with such immense wealth one could do a generous amount of good for one's friends. On the other hand, one could also wreak a hateful vengeance on one's enemies.

Now freed from prison, and armed with untold riches, a wealth of intelligence, and a countenance utterly unrecognizable, Dantes fulfills his vow to wreak complete and utter revenge on those who conspired against him.

Outstanding.

This was a riveting story, although I sometimes had to go back as it is very intricately detailed with sub-stories and many characters.
I thought the narrator was excellent, having tried a different narrator to begin with of whom I could not follow.

The Text, depth of characters

Beautifully written, the language is so vivid and rich in complexity while sublimely simple with modern day applications.
I had watched the 2002 film version and was left thoroughly disappointed, particularly as I was misled to believe Merecedes and Edmund would reconcile.

Excellent in all respects

As my beloved wife used to say, it's a classic for a reason. Harrison's narration is easy on the ear and consistently engaging, no small feat in over 50 hours with such a broad cast of characters and ages.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it without hesitation.

This is the best story and performance

My father used to tell me the story when I was younger and I was fascinated by the treasure and secret notes had the escape. I didn’t read and listen to Harrison’s until now and it is even more fascinating. Harrison’s performance was exceptional, sometimes I even thought “is it really him alone bring so many voices alive?” and so consistent. If you like the story in the first place, this is no doubt the best audio version.

An amazing story brought to life!

I got this been because the film is one of my favorite films, like most books the film missed and changes so much. The performance of B.J Harrison is gripping, I was captivated all the way through, the preview does not do his performance justice, man, woman or child he plays them all so well! There are a few strangely placed characters and storylines, you wonder where they are going but then it all comes together and builds momentum at the end, I couldn’t stop listening. I know a lot of people will see 52 hours and think it’s too long, for me I wish it was longer so I could have had more of the Count. I was very sad when the book ended but more than happy to have heard the story told in such a great way.

The greatest tale of revenge ever written

Dumas' brilliant story is not simply a superb adventure but also a reflection on the price of a vengeance relentlessly pursued. The narrator's occasional mangling of French is annoying but overall it is a wonderful listen. I was sorry to get to the end.
