Summary

Prepare to lose yourself in the enchanting new novel from Kate Morton.

'My father called me Birdie; he said I was his little bird. Others knew me as his child, the clockmaker’s daughter. Edward called me his muse, his destiny. I am remembered as a thief, an imposter, a girl who rose above her station, who was not chaste. My real name, no one remembers. The truth about that summer, no one else knows.'

In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor in rural Oxfordshire. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared, a priceless heirloom is missing and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins.

Over 150 years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist’s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.

Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?

Told by multiple voices across time, The Clockmaker's Daughter is a story of murder, mystery and thievery, of art, love and loss. And flowing through it like a river is the voice of a woman who stands outside time, whose name has been forgotten by history but who has watched it all unfold: Birdie Bell, the clockmaker’s daughter.

A Kate Morton fan .... but this was too much.

I have just finished this book. I did enjoy it... to a point. I feel it was too long for the reader to hold it all together without at least a map/ family tree/ house plan to follow! The idea of the house being the main character of the book aka Birdie, I get and like. The literary allusions and cultural historic overtones are very interesting but I just wanted to feel with the characters and for Elodie to get to the bottom of things and find resolution, past and present. Sadly I didn’t and feel frustrated.

Too confusing!

I have read all of Kate Morton's books so I am a fan but this one leaps backwards and forwards with time and people and therefore as it is not a paper book where you can go back and check things, it left me confused a lot of the time. Sadly I do not recommend it.

Narrator cannot pronounce the word 'familiar'

Thoroughly enjoyed this story, but I wish I had bought the paper copy as the narrator lets it down unfortunately.

The narrator never changes her tone or makes it clear when she changes perspective from Elodie to Lily, so it took me a long time to even figure out what was going on. I feel like I missed quite a lot of the story as a result of this. She also cannot pronounce the word 'familar' which was irritating as it's a surprisingly common word in this book!

Beautifully Haunting

Wonderfully observed. The mystery surrounding all those who’s lives intertwine and are affected by the house by the river over 150yrs is beautifully told. Kate Morton at her best as she brings the past bang up to date. Didn’t want it to end!

Another great from Kate Morton.

Throughly enjoyed this audio book. I have read/listened to all of Kate’s books and never been disappointed. I particularly enjoy how Kate’s books go back and forth between past and present, weaving the story between them.

Enjoyed it in the end

Took a while to get all the characters and threads sorted in my mind, but very good read, plenty going on and excellent length. Narrator is excellent.

Could have ended better

This is the first Kate Morton book I've listened to/read, I enjoyed the book overall - however I did find it confusing with all the different character changes & got lost off from time to time of who was who - it's definitely a book I'll have to listen to again. Even thought towards to end I felt like I was starting to understand how all the storylines interlinked, I was disappointed it left it more for the imagination of the reader to think of what might have happened going forward. I did loved the mystery & the history elements but felt lacked something.
