Summary

When Gold's daughter is viciously attacked by a neighbor'sdog and barely escapes with her life, Gold's world is torn open. Haunted by the incident and unable to convince local authorities to take action, he agrees to a friend's offer of retaliation. Epitome of Short Storytelling

A well paced, engaging and thought provoking short story that explores the consequences of reactive emiotions. I found a fantastic discussion of the book online and the writer of the post shared the following quote inspired by The Chains themes ...

"The truth about yourself is that you don’t know it. It is impossible to understand the entirety of yourself as you’re moving in time, as you are being written, drafted and composed"

and the narrator Anthony Heald is one of the best in the business.

:A mile or more long.

Tobias Wolff has again crafted a short story, beautifully worded so a joy simply to read, but also one to ponder. Not exactly unexpected in it's results but still interesting and a good reminder of our interconnectedness. His ability to observe and reveal character and emotion in a few brief pages exceeds many other authors ability to do so in much longer books.
Ably read by Anthony Heald, this story is Free to download with the Audible Plus programme.
Definitely recommended
