Summary
The Cat Who Saved Books is a heart-warming story about finding courage, caring for others - and the tremendous power of books.
Grandpa used to say it all the time: books have tremendous power. But what is that power really?
Natsuki Books was a tiny second-hand bookshop on the edge of town. Inside, towering shelves reached the ceiling, every one crammed full of wonderful books. Rintaro Natsuki loved this space that his grandfather had created. He spent many happy hours there, reading whatever he liked. It was the perfect refuge for a boy who tended to be something of a recluse.
After the death of his grandfather, Rintaro is devastated and alone. It seems he will have to close the shop. Then, a talking tabby cat called Tiger appears and asks Rintaro for help. The cat needs a book lover to join him on a mission. This odd couple will go on three magical adventures to save books from people have imprisoned, mistreated and betrayed them. Finally, there is one last rescue that Rintaro must attempt alone....
Sosuke Natsukawa's international best seller, translated from Japanese by Louise Heal Kawai, is a story for those for whom books are so much more than words on paper.

A beautiful book that had me reflecting on my own reading
Truly an incredible translation and beautiful novel. Wonderfully read as well. The story follows a young boy and his dealings with grief alongside a talking cat. What more could you want?

Very enjoyable & thought provoking
I really found this book enjoyable. Who doesn’t like a talking cat? The fact that it was obviously originally Japanese made it even more enjoyable, as it had aspects of that culture running through it.

Totally Silly and I loved it
I listened to this in one sitting on a snowy Saturday afternoon, whilst doing paperwork. Easy listening and I did burst out laughing a couple of times with Tiger's attitude. I really liked the fact that some Japanese words were kept . Because in my view if every word was translated I feel the story would have lost something of itself.
Looking now for my next Japanese cat book.

Very questionable narration
The narrator’s odd choices of accent were very distracting and took me out of the book a lot. The story itself discussed interesting subjects and debates but felt like a lot of telling - at times I felt I should just be reading an essay.
Overall I enjoyed the different viewpoints of books but I wouldn’t read it again

Heart warming read
Nice light uplifting story, quirky and imaginative. Nicely written with engaging characters. Also really liked the narrator's melodic tone. Perfect for long journeys in the car kept me engaged without being stressful

A fun and easy listen/read
What a lovely story! The characters are authentic and relatable, and the hidden meanings of the story are what we all need to remember in today's society. A must-read for anyone who wants to start their new year with a good book and adventure!

Enjoyable, thoughtful and easy to listen
I was initially unsure about this book but continued with it and really pleased I did. The narration was excellent and worked well with the book. It is a Japanese story translated into English, which again was excellent. The story is so much more than a talking cat and a boy visiting different vaults. It is thought provoking in what role books play in the modern world, who has access to them. How modern technology is influencing a decline in book reading and about morals and what you believe to be right. I enjoyed it.
