What a wonderful love story. I was gripped from start to finish. The cold of the Russian winter seeped through the text and the love of Alex and Tatiana burned through. I never wanted it to end and sorely missed it when it did. The characters were beautifully drawn and Paulina Simons writing flowed beautifully.

although this was a very good story, I was recommended this book as a travel companion, by a friend, as being about the struggles of a russian family as they entered the 2nd world war, for my taste it was a bit to much romance and not much about the struggles. i clearly read the recommendation wrong.

but I saw it through to the end, and although I can not fault the story and the characters were easy to identify with, it just wasnt for me.

Absolutely loved James Langton's performance. I really couldn't stop listening. Lost myself completely in this story.

Honestly I’m not sure how I feel about this audiobook but it could be down to the production. I found the narrator doing weird accents off putting to be honest, end of the day they’re supposed to be Russian - but other than that I enjoyed his narration. I love the characters, you absolutely fall in love with Tatia and without spoiling it hate the people you’re supposed to hate! I think had I read the book instead of listened I may have enjoyed it more. It’s a long haul and I was invested wanting to know the ending. The depiction of Russia during the war is so heart breaking, and really gives you an insight to the actual suffering, rather than them just being stats on a page.

I've loved this book from years ago and even asked for it to be brought to life on Audible when life got too busy for me to sit and read it again. My excitement about my wish finally coming true soon turned to poutiness when the narrator was male and he gave Alexander a Scottish accent and didn't give him the strong accent he deserved. Then other characters had English, sometimes London accents and I couldn't help but roll my eyes with disappointment.
Ok that is said and so if you've never read the book you will probably enjoy the narration.
This is a love story, it's beautiful and you'll fall in love with Tatiana and Alexander. Despite the narration I'll listen to this again and again while I wait for Rothfuss to get the last book out (The Kingkiller Chronicles)

Bad choice of narrator

There will never be another book as brilliant as this. I first read this when I was 17 and I bawled my eyes out all night long. It's an emotional roller coaster of a story. Tatiana and Alexander are soul mates, and their love for each other is so pure it breaks your heart. I have yet to read a story that even comes close to this and now I don't believe there ever will be. Oh how I wish I could read it again for the 1st time....

Initially I didn't like the narrator, his voice is strong but I didn't enjoy the Scottish accent for Alexander and I disliked how he voiced Tatiana. But he grew on me and did perform very well.
