About this listen

Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) stars in the fourth episode of the award-winning Brenda and Effie Mysteries by Paul Magrs.

Romance, it seems, has come Effie's way. She has started to date Keith, a latter-day Elephant Man who lives in a caravan.

Brenda thinks her friend has had her head turned and counsels against getting carried away. In her experience the Elephant Man didn't have a trunk and large ears.

Brenda, meanwhile, is having flashbacks to her adventures in foggy London in the 1880s. She was caught up in the hunt for a killer known as the London Monster - a murderer who left curious contusions on his victims' bodies. Wounds that could only have been caused by some sort of prehensile trunk.

Now there's a rash of murders on the streets of Whitby. Victims bear those same trunk-inflicted weals on their flesh. Effie won't be warned, however. And what's worse, Keith has recognized Brenda as his nineteenth-century nemesis. Now Keith has decreed that Brenda must die - and that Effie must be his bride!

I love Paul magrs Brenda and Effie books and this is no different. Wonderful fun, interesting, unpredictable stories. With loveable flawed characters. I enjoyed Anne Reid reading it and found her believable as the character s and endearing. I've thourally enjoyed finding more Brenda & Effie story(s) to enjoy, would definitely recommend all four short stories & the books come to that.

Another episode of Brenda's past lives, coupled with Keith the trunk killer! Immaculate sound and effects from Bafflegab create a spooky circus atmosphere and Anne Reid gives her all as the discombobulated lady.

Trunk tales.
