Was it the narrator's fault?

I am not sure, but he certainly helps to make it impossible to follow the story. The characters are indistinguishable and after re-listening to nearly the whole of first half of the book, I was still trying hard to understand what is I suspect a very straight forward plot. That said, the story is probably not that riveting
