Great book, not great voice casting

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find it very difficult to even understand the faux throaty drawl of Parisa’s voice, especially when imitating other characters voices. It’s just too low, it’s impossible to hear or ascertain what’s being said!

Unexpected Six

I had read the first book in this series. With books that have multiple POVs I sometimes struggle so I chose the audiobook. Some of the narrators were so different from how I had imagined the characters to sound in my head, it was jarring. I enjoyed Nico, Callum, Gideon and Reina most. The story itself spends a lot of time focused on the inner dialogues of the characters where I wished there was more action. I’ll definitely be keen to read the third.

Characters with great potential but spend more time thinking than doing

Olivie Blake is a very talented writer who makes each individual characters perspective feel unique to that character.
The way Blake incorporates so many philosophical concepts is great for the development of the characters but is also very educational for the reader.
However, the first book seemed to be an introduction that built up to this second book and in turn this second book in the Trilogy.......just kept building. There's too much time spent in character development, dialogue, and learning.
The characters don't seem to use their powers much and there's very few high stake moments. The ones that are there are such a reward when we get them, such as the first fight in the initial book and the mental fight between Parisa and Callum, and then we have to wait. There's too much time spent on the build up and very little pay off.
Overall I liked this second book a lot more and found myself thinking deeply at many times as I reflected on the concepts and questions brought to life.
Excited for the third book.

Skip Parisa

Like its predecessor the story picks up towards the end. The actor voicing Parisa made their chapter completely unintelligible. I had to skip it as it was so grating. Character choice, perhaps but it's an audio book. I need to understand what she's saying and I can't.

Interesting concept. I read the first book and was curious to find out more but was a bit disappointed.

Intriguing but ultimately disappointing. I struggled with understanding what Parisa was saying at times. I also was irritated at the number of times the characters ‘raised an eyebrow’ or ‘smiled grimly’. The other narrators were good though.

To many narrators

Overall ok story but disappointed from the first. However to many disjointed voice actors found some difficult to listen to. Ruined the flow of the book.

Not a great book

The book is hard to follow. It’s a little boring as the same things happen in each chapter and there is no impact or change in the characters actions or outcomes. They all just individually study and try some magic out which doesn’t really work the way they expect.
There is no character development at all.
The voices are almost cringy at times, acting and sounding like bratty teenagers.
I decided to not finish the book as it was leading to nothing.

The middle

This is definitely the middle book aka filler for the finale. Ok nevertheless. And let’s be honest Tristan’s voice is bloody annoying.

Loved the ideas more than the delivery

Love the idea of different narrators for different perspectives but the actors need to talk to each other about accents first. I'll buy that different perspectives of the same accent will be different but no one's going to listen to Tristan and then repeat what he says like he's a royal or a Dickensian orphan. Story was a slow burn, considering the way the previous book ended. First section feels designed to create conflicts that weren't there and were sometimes out of character. But it does pick up well. Really well. Some of the ideas in the second half of the book were worth the investigation. I look forward to book 3.
