About this listen

A gripping tale of espionage and murder in Elizabethan London.

London, 1590. Queen Elizabeth I's control over her kingdom is wavering. Amidst a tumultuous backdrop of Spanish plotters, Catholic heretics and foreign wars threatening the country's fragile stability, the body of a small boy is found in the City of London, with strange marks that no one can explain.

When idealistic physician Nicholas Shelby finds another body displaying the same marks only days later, he becomes convinced that a killer is at work, preying on the weak and destitute of London.

Determined to find out who is behind these terrible murders, Nicholas is joined in his investigations by Bianca, a mysterious tavern keeper. As more bodies are discovered, the pair find themselves caught in the middle of a sinister plot. With the killer still at large, and Bianca in terrible danger, Nicholas's choice seems impossible - to save Bianca, or save himself....

I'd recommend this audio book for all Shardlake fans. Easy listening - although a bit confusing as chapters flit from one scenario to another within themselves - and story itself is thoroughly creditable. Would have been 5 stars but for confusing scenarios.

Enjoyable & Well Read

A satisfying and entertaining book with a sound historical base. The narrator has quite a light voice but it was well up to the task.

Entertaining

Enjoyable listen although slightly slow going at times. Very good performance. Story is a bit contrived and characters a bit thin but worth a listen for sure.

Well researched historical fiction

Eyesight in the reasons for murder but, a nice interesting story with no sex (thankfully) Era vividly described creating a friendship and warmth towards the reader.

Really enjoyable story and an insight in to Elizabeth England while listening to a crime thriller tale as well as finding out about Nonsuch Palace having visited Nonsuch Park as it is now. Would definitely listen to more stories of the budding pathologist/doctor/surgeon/apothecary. Excellently read too. Lord Cecil’s voice stood out and came across as very menacing and calculating. You really would not have wanted to be on the wrong side of his scheming!

Very like Shardlake stories. Excellent

Loved the vivid description of life in that period, really felt sucked in to the past . Characters varied and lifelike, plot was fast moving . Excellent narrator always a good listen when he tells a story.

Loved this listen, listened in just over a day couldn’t switch it off.

Great story I was gripped straight away . The writer took you into Elizabeth England , the sights ,smells and sounds of that time . I could hardly put it down in fact only when had to a real page or headphone turner can’t wait to read more from this author . I’m now sad to have finished it highly recommend.

Gripping story from first to last

I'm not sure what it is about this story - but I struggled with it - especially at first. The misery? The depth of care from some where others where oblivious and uncaring? Not sure. However perseverance paid off and ultimately I did want to get to the end and find out what happened.

This narrator is one of the best I've listened to, for you forget the narrator and become totally involved in this very exciting story - filled with details about life in 16th century London. Such a narrator does not draw attention but places the story and characters firmly in the mind. Thus the story becomes pre-eminent and a riveting tale it is. Life was terrible for the many, and even the rich trembled at the thought of being denounced as 'papists'. The tension never fails. Altogether excellent.

Fascinating thriller set in Elizabethan London
