Summary

There’s a serial killer on the loose, bent on working his way through the alphabet. And as a macabre calling card he leaves beside each victim’s corpe the ABC Railway Guide open at the name of the town where the murder has taken place.

Having begun with Andover, Bexhill and then Churston, there seems little chance of the murderer being caught – until he makes the crucial and vain mistake of challenging Hercule Poirot to frustrate his plans…

Well read. Coherent plot. Slow.

Having recently watched the TV adaptation I wanted to know the 'true story'. As usual the TV adaptation deviated from the original story, supposedly to make it more dramatic. And, as usual, it wasn't as good as the book. In my opinion, this was not one of Christie's best related stories. The plot was good, but the story was slow. I was pleased to see Poirot and Hastings together again. The plot made sense and could have been intriguing but it felt flat. It lacked the usual humour. The narrator was good, but I confess I frequently fell asleep whilst listening at night, and had to rewind.

A fantastic classic Poirot mystery!

Really enjoyed this, Poirot at his best and a great one to start with if you are venturing into reading\Listening to Agatha Christie’s series. The narrator was spot on with a great range of aptly suited character voices, was just like listening to a play broadcast or an actual drama. Fantastic mystery plot, there’s no guessing ‘who dunnit’ so to speak, but that is part of the gem of Christie’s work where we can enjoy the big reveal at the end by one of her ingenious characters! Well read, 5 stars all round and well deserved!

Fascinating

In some ways the plot is familiar but this rendition captures the author’s intention much more fully than other versions

fantastic read

fantastic,
for anyone wanting an extremely satifying read, i would strongly recommend. Christie does an amazing job of tying you in with suspense and frustration at who the killer may or may not be and then right at the end, a resolution. Fraser also does an amazing job of narrating the story.

A fantastic story with excellent narration.

This was my first try in this genre, and I’m so glad I hit download! The story is great- kept me guessing throughout. But the real hero is the narration. Trust me, you’ll enjoy this story.

Serial killer template

It's not Poirot's greatest mystery but it does neatly set up a template for so many serial killer narratives for years to come

The perfect whodunnit

Others - many - may rate The Murder of Roger Ackroyd or And Then There Were None as Agatha Christie’s finest novels but this for me is her at her sharpest and keenest - and also funniest - best. Perfect, and perfectly narrated by Hugh Fraser, who brings a light but sure touch to the adaptation.

Great story

Great story. Brilliant performance by Hugh Fraser as always.

Minor complaint - PLEASE change the picture - this one is from the Tv programme which bore very little similarity to the book as read here. Back to the old picture please.

A great performance of a good book

This is one of my favourite Poirot stories, and it was a delight to listen to Hugh Fraser narrating it. He does an excellent job of bringing all the characters to life.

The story is completely engaging, with enough red herrings to keep you guessing until the end. Even if you know the story (like I do), it was still great to listen to how it all plays out.

Would I listen to another book written by Agatha Christie? Yes.
Would I listen to another book read by Hugh Fraser? Yes.
