About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Thatcher Stole My Trousers, written and read by Alexei Sayle.

'Enlightening … Funny, smart, original and provocative ... It is hard to imagine the stalwarts of Mock the Week recognising the Druze militia leader Walid Jumblatt in a London cinema' NEW STATESMAN

'Few standups have come close to capturing a fraction of this creative energy in a book … Alexei Sayle is an exception' GUARDIAN

"What I brought to comedy was an authentic working-class voice plus a threat of genuine violence - nobody in Monty Python looked like a hard case who’d kick your head in."

In 1971, comedians on the working men's club circuit imagined that they would be free to continue telling their tired, racist, misogynistic gags forever. But their nemesis, a nineteen-year-old Marxist art student, was slowly coming to meet them…

Thatcher Stole My Trousers chronicles a time when comedy and politics united in electrifying ways. Recounting the founding of the Comedy Store, the Comic Strip and the Young Ones, and Alexei’s friendships with the comedians who – like him – would soon become household names, this is a unique and beguiling blend of social history and memoir. Fascinating, funny, angry and entertaining, it is a story of class and comedy, politics and love, fast cars and why it’s difficult to foul a dwarf in a game of football.

Alexie performs the memoire as a comedy routine. It's genuinely funny and engaging. It takes you through his development as an artist/comedian and gives you an insight to his upbringing. He appears a unique character.

Funny and honest

Excellent narration. Laughed a lot and yet there are moments of sadness scattered throughout Alexei's autobiography.

Hilarious

Everything. Apart from an incorrect statement he made, in which he claimed that Uncle Joe's Mint Balls, the popular lucky sweet, were made in Everton. 100% incorrect; they have always been made by the William Santus company in Wigan, Lancashire. Home of the Wigan Pier, the disappointing tourist attraction made famous by George Orwell, and home to the terribly cheating Wigan Warriors rugby league team.

Alexei Sayle Voice. he has a natural Gobby Scouser /Liverpudlian voice.

This is the second volume of Alexei's autobiography. I loved the first book and was looking forward to this one. I wasn't disappointed it's as good as it's predecessor if not better. it's honest and very well written. It's hardly surprising that the Author gave up comedy for a literary career for several years. As well as talking about his life he also puts the reader in the timeline of society and social history. It's a brilliant book about a genius of comedy and well worth a listen. I can't wait for the next volume.

Genius.
