I’m 59 years old. I’ve lived in Northumberland along the Tyne Valley and fished all of my life but I have never seen an otter; listen to this and you’ll know why. I did once see the otter hounds and huntsmen out on the River Allen near Ridley Hall / Allen Banks. How unbelievably cruel. Mankind killing otters to the point of extinction for ‘sport’ and because we considered them to be vermin.

Very good story. Perhaps listen to the epilogue first.

Gripping, poetic, atmospheric. I loved it. Well worth a listen. Narration perfect. The life of an otter is a hard one.

Excellent listen

Madly truly deeply wonderful
Having spent many summers holidays at Loch Hourn we were so privileged to see many otters and swim in waters at Camusfearna .

I have always loved this book. From childhood. Being able to listen invokes a beautiful picture and deep emotions.

Beautiful story, beautifully read.

I listened to the book. Perhaps I really should have read it; the prose is so poetic and dense, I think it would be easier to read to oneself than to listen to a narrator.

The reader did a pretty good job, though a little too fast paced at times. Nevertheless, he read well.

Tarka: Otterly fantastic!

Listening to this book I could really picture the well described scenes that could be either beautiful or painfully ugly.
It completely involved me and was at times heart breaking.

Brilliant book

Had this title in my library for ages. Thought I’d give it a listen. It was ok and I got in to all the characters of the animals but the narration was poor. It should have had more excitement in the narrators tone. Several narrators would have brought the book alive. 4 stars for this one.

This was ok but the narration let it down slightly.

You live every moment of this wonderful story about Tarka. Despite the horror it is quite enchanting. How dreadful are some humans to wild animals, on top of a very difficult existence and all for sport.

Mesmerising

I almost couldn’t continue but I’m so glad I did. The afterword is well worth listening to.

Beautiful & Brutal

This was read to my class as a child, but I missed hearing the end. Years later the book is still a delight. A descriptive feat about the life and perils of being an otter

A beautiful novel
