Just like all little girls, I hoped I was special and that one day my powers would be revealed. My parents would be bewildered, my friends would equally worship and envy me, and my bullies would run away in terror! Nothing happened when I turned 10. I didn't grow wings at 12, still wasn't able to make things move with my mind at 14, and at 16, I was already too old to believe in such nonsense. Well, what do you think happened the day I turned 18? I got the confirmation that I was only human. In the mail! Oh, and also an invitation to apply to the Grim Reaper Academy. Because, apparently, humans can be Grim Reapers, too.

Fast forward to day one, semester one, year one. There's a test! No one told me I'd have to take a test to enter! But there are only 22 Reapers in the world, the competition is tough, so I guess it makes sense? If I pass, then I will be sorted according to what kind of Death I'll make if I survive the rigors of the Academy.

But this is my chance, dammit! This is what I've been waiting for all my life! Okay, so I'm not a princess, or a mermaid, or Sailor Moon. But I can be a Grim Reaper one day. I'll take it!

This story reminds me a bit of Harry Potter but for a slightly more mature audience and an addition of romance. Older teens and adults that liked the Harry Potter book (or just movies) might really love this book.

I was hooked pretty much straight away. Another review likens it to Harry Potter but more adult and I agree (although never thought that whilst listening) it's based in a magical school, this first Mila's first year and she's by hated by all but one student. Life was hard at home but harder at school. This book is about her battles to survive and devastating news that knocks her sideways. it's a damn riveting book. Looking forward to listening to book 2!

love love loved this from start to finish was great was slow going but honestly stay with it as it's a great easy listen already on book two

I liked the idea but thought the execution was a bit weird. Mila's story is confusing. I didn't quite get the parents and she's very stubborn which grates at times. I really didn't get the love interests either. They didn't feel natural. The bones are there though and I'm intrigued enough to see what happens next.

The main character is honestly so terrible, I literally had to tap out because I hated her sm.
All she does is judge, talk shit and complain. Super boring, super unoriginal, typical woe-is-me “I’m not like other girls” bullshit and of course it has girls being mean to her just because… *eye roll*.
Read it if you want, but me? I’m done.
