When Emira is apprehended at a supermarket for ‘kidnapping’ the white child she’s actually babysitting, it sets off an explosive chain of events. Her employer Alix, a feminist blogger with the best of intentions, resolves to make things right.

This has such great reviews, but it is a very dull story, nothing much happens, I dont get why people love it so?

Really quite dull!

First favourite of the year!
I'm truly impressed by Reid's ability to convey so much without the book being too dense or feeling like the reader is spoon-fed.
At first, I wasn't sure why Alix's (the white mother's) perspective was necessary, I didn't find her voice interesting, but it served the book perfect.
Reid managed to capture the intricacies of exploiting Black people and how it comes in a variety of ways, to prove that you don't to be overt racist to exploit others.
Will definitely check anything the authors publishes in the future (if she chooses to)

Such a good story, I wanted it to go on for much longer! Original, thought provoking, modern, easily digestible, unpatronising.
The narrator was outstanding too.

Brilliant book

liked the story...thought it had sooo much potential...but then it just ended in the most anticlimactic way ever!

Very well told story and good narrator. Well worth reading and quirky storyline kept my interest.

Touching

It's interesting that the reviews on this novel are SO varied and I think that says more about the readers than the book. So many readers want the story more 'resolved' or for the main character to be more assertive about dealing with the problems she encounters, rather than just be an average, normal sort of person.

I enjoyed it a lot. I think it's a really engaging book with an interesting plot and characters. It tackles different forms of racism and other prejudices too, like sexism and snobbery.
The fact that most of the racism discussed is not overt and more subtle and unconscious, makes it really interesting.

Thought provoking read

I really enjoyed this audio book and thought it raised lots of interesting questions. I wish certain things had played out differently in the end, but I was gripped by the regular plot twists and the story gripped me. I’d definitely recommend, and think it would make a good book club discussion too!

Gripped!
