Summary

Lucy Baxter is at the forefront in this stand-alone novella. She imagines she is simply going to take up the position of companion to a young Victorian girl in genteel London, but very quickly, events move out of her control, and she finds herself on a journey that she could not have imagined. Separated from her brothers, she is forced to make decisions based only on her own moral code, and hope they will lead her to safety and success.

Time travel at its best

I don't normally like novellas because they are over before they really start but this author packs so much into this book that it is like going on an epic adventure (or full story) and I loved it. Being a short listen it's also a great way to sample the series if its your first adventure with the Baxter siblings but at the same time still great for the more accomplished time traveller, especially as the books are all standalone and can be read in any order. The author fills the story with a lot of history and adventure in a gun way to keep the listener or reader hooked. How? By focusing on just one Baxter sibling, which keeps the series fresh and works well for this story and era. The time machine only plays a small part in this story, so from that point of view this was a lot easier to follow along with. Again the author includes names that you will recognise from history and some you don't, but I like at the end of the book where he tells you more about them and who you can Google if you are inclined. The author doesn't just suck the character into a different time in history but he very cleverly also does it to the listener and you feel the highs and lows with the characters. I am loving this series and the glimpse into history.
This time the museum is missing an artefact from 1855 and with no clue what there are looking for the three Baxter children head back in time to answer an add for a companion for Sarah. Lucy wasn't prepared to be whisked off on a train and boat to a different country leaving her brother's far behind, with no idea where she is. Uncle Archie said to not change time but just do what feels right. Following her heart and an adventurous Sarah, Lucy heads to a war zone, where a new friendship leads her to a meeting with Florence Nightingale but can she find what is missing from the museum and a way back to her brothers.I
The narrator does a wonderful job and like the title suggests she helps you get stuck listening to the story until the very end.
