About this listen

Rosie Strange doesn't believe in ghosts or witches or magic. It's no surprise therefore that when she inherits the ramshackle Essex Witch Museum, her first thought is to take the money and run.

Still, the museum exerts a curious pull over Rosie. There's the eccentric academic who bustles in to demand she help in a hunt for the bones of the notorious Ursula Cadence, a witch long since put to death. And there's curator Sam Stone, a man about whom Rosie can't decide if he's tiresomely annoying or extremely captivating.

Finding herself and Sam embroiled in a peculiar centuries-old mystery, Rosie quickly discovers that the secrets of the past come with their own real danger as a strange magic threatens to envelop them all.

It took me a while to make up my mind about this book. I wasn't keen on the narration although I got used to it.
Some parts were well researched where others didn't ring true. Like the church and priest involvement, witches were pagan, as well as the devilish/supernatural elements (the devil being a Christian construct). I will however, lookout for more books in this series if they are written with the hope that these aspects will improve and the dialogue for the main character, Rosie Strange, tightens up and makes her look less ignorant and silly.
One to watch with the makings of a good series of light listening, mildly creepy books.

A reasonable listen

I really didn't know what to expect when I downloaded this book but I found it so funny that I was laughing out loud at some points but a great story I will be definitely getting future books.

I loved the story but I found myself cringing way too often at lead character Rosie's selfish attitude displayed throughout. I suppose she was intended to annoy, given her line of work, but still. Too much.

Annoyingly selfish main character

For a story that has adventure and a bit of suspense in it, it certainly is a layer back affair.

The story is quite slow throughout. However, it’s enjoyable and there’s a chuckle to be had very often. The plot is good gets a bit weak towards the end,
This book is certainly interesting enough to have you sticking with it too the end.

A nice nonchalant adventure

What did you like best about Strange Magic? What did you like least?

I thought it was a reasonably good story and with a better narrator it would probably have been very gripping, I liked it enough to carry on listening to the end to find out what happened.
I didn' t like the emphesis on estuary speak and Essex girl.
The story could have been much more gripping if some of the characters were more believable. I definitely did not like the narrator, when you have to rely on other people reading to you it is very important that it is a good naeeator

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Not bad a bit wet and too essex

Would you be willing to try another one of Julia Barrie’s performances?

Definitely not

Did Strange Magic inspire you to do anything?

Not really

Any additional comments?

I probably won't try any other books by Syd Moore unless they are read by a better narrator

A bit too Essex girl for me
