About this listen

Dennis Wheatley was the British master of occult writing, selling millions of books from the 1930s onwards. One of his most famous creations was the Duke de Richleau.

In this audiobook it is World War II, and Britain faces increasing pressure and burden as the Nazis swarm across Europe. When the Duke de Richleau is asked to look into how Nazi U-boats know exactly where and when supply convoys in the Atlantic will be, he discovers that evil occult forces are at work. The duke discovers that a voodoo adept from Haiti is travelling on the astral plane to gain information regarding the convoys. Now the Duke and his friends must confront their powerful foe not only on the physical plane but on the astral as well. It’s a terrific book, and Christopher Lee delivers a wonderful performance of this fascinating story.

Immersive

Ingenious and quite informative . Exceptionally well read. Some terminology would be considered racist by todays standards but this was not the authors intention so give him the benefit of the doubt.

Still relevant.

Theirs a very clear message at the end of this timeless story, that's still relevant in the unusual times we see ourselves in today's world/2021.

Stranger Days

A superb performance by Sir Christopher Lee, as he does different voices for each character. People say Wheatley is outmoded these days, but at the end of the book he writes about how a "new world order"wants to enslave us all and support "the suppression of all liberty as necessary to the welfare of the state". He wrote that in the 30s but those words are more relevant than ever in 2021.

Doesn’t flow as well as the devil rides out. But an ok listen

I very much enjoyed the Devil Rides out, so downloaded this one too. It’s a bit weird. But does a decent adventure job. You also have to remember it is a story of it’s time, so those of a sensitive disposition will find some of the prose problematic by today’s standards, which doesn’t really add to the story arc either. Having said all that, decent enough and Christopher Lee was a fantastic narrator.

Ignore the out of date clichés

Christopher Lee is perfect as narrator because he actually played the role of the Duke .
The style is dated but the book has a couple of clever twists towards the end which are designed to shock .
