About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Millions of pounds have gone missing, and the Department have sent agent Bernard Samson to Washington to track them down. But this mission is just the start of something far deeper and darker. It will take him from the English suburbs to Berlin, the South of France to Los Angeles and the heart of a maelstrom. In the first part of the Hook, Line and Sinker trilogy, friends become enemies, pursuer becomes victim and no one - not even Bernard himself - is above suspicion.

A Bernard Samson Novel.

Critic reviews

"A master of fictional espionage." (Daily Mail)

"In Deighton's best books - like this one - the narrative glides forward on rollers, and the scenes and characters fit perfectly into place. The result is marvellous." (Independent)

Bernard is by far my favourite spy and this is a solid book in the series. The story felt like it was setting up for the next two and I enjoyed the slow burn and interspersed action. Looking forward to the next two.

Exceptional narration as always.

Solid if a little slow outing for Bernard

I love the fact that you can re-read or listen a number of times, with gaps in between. That way you pick up lots more nuances and pick up on things you’ve forgotten from last time. Never anything but exciting.
I write about real espionage history, but Deighton’s book are a joy and escapist entertainment.

Fabulous

Not the strongest of stories in the series however the settings and relationships are perfectly described. This one may not appeal to the more action-oriented reader but I really enjoyed how the characters are developed. I look forward to the next in the series.

Perfect descriptive writing

Usual first class story with all the twists and turns from characters that I know. Just the ticket. Cannot wait to read the next one.

The plot seems heading in a rather silly direction. Hopefully things will improve in the next book

Getting a bit silly

Having loved Game, Set and Match, this one lacked a gripping storyline. It really feels like part of a bigger story as opposed to a stand alone book.

Incomplete
