Once upon a time in what was then reasonably Great Britain, there was a world in which the not too serious business of politics was practised without those people known today, nonsensically, as spin doctors, and without whispers against those who were supposed to be friends, but who were in fact blockages on the ladder of ambition.

This audiobook is a wistful recollection of those days. None of it actually happened. But it would be nice to think that it might have.

Written as a fictional account of a bye-election in the early 1980s it has a strong resemblance to real events. Set at a time after a Labour defeat led by a hard-left leader, the rise of the SDP/LIberal Alliance and the Conservatives in power with a strong woman as PM. Ring any bells! The story is a behind the scenes account of the strategies of the minders trying to promote their candidates and undermine those of their opponents. Lots of dirty tricks, interpersonal strife and elicit relationships. The political leanings of the author are all too clear. I enjoyed the book even though the sheer number of characters left me confused at times as to which party they were connected with. The topic invites comparison with Jeffrey Archer's political novels and I have to say Archer wins.
The narrator is excellent and helps the identification of the various protagonists by giving them different accents.
