About this listen

Signals is the story of the world economy, told in the language of everyday objects, places and events - from magazine covers and supermarkets to public protests.

Pippa Malmgren argues that by being alert to the many signals around us, we can be empowered to deal with the varied troubles and treasures the world economy inevitably brings.

Economics is not just maths and data. Perfume and makeup are part of the world economy, too. Signals will help you understand why the size of chocolate bars, steaks and apartments are shrinking. It explains why the government says we face deflation, yet everyone feels their cost of living is rising and their standard of living is falling. Rising protein prices are felt not just during your weekly shop but by the leaders of emerging markets who are obliged to reach for food and energy assets to feed their people. The increasing near misses between America's spy planes and the fighter jets of China and Russia are no coincidence.

Malmgren reveals how our daily lives are affected by the ongoing battle, created by central bankers, between inflation and deflation. The fallout of this battle is evident in the rise of antiestablishment voting, the return of social unrest to emerging markets, the movement of manufacturing jobs back to the West and pressure from mass immigration.

Economic forces are breaking the social contract between citizens and their states. If the only real solution is innovation, then the key question becomes whether governments are hostile or hospitable to efforts to build tomorrow's economy today.

Malmgren shows us who is already building the future and how to be part of it. With its wonderful range of examples, from a Vogue magazine cover to a protest by a Tibetan monk, Signals demonstrates that although we can't predict the future of the world economy, we can better prepare ourselves for it.

Far from being the concern of only a privileged few, Malmgren shows that economics is a hot topic that touches every life.

This audiobook is probably very engaging if you have a fair grasp of basic economics and how various concepts interact. I therefore feel bad giving a negative review when I wasn't the target audience, so I have added a star. And I will preface by saying I'm considering buying the physical book so I can take my time and make notes.

I bought this audiobook assuming it was written in everyday language for the average person. I know nothing about economics and 80% of the book went over my head. It is not full of arcane concepts or difficult maths. But it is dense with basic concepts like trade deficits, inflation, deflation, market forces, quantitative easing, government bonds, negative interest, commodity prices, foreign versus domestic investment, and savings versus assets. It is one thing to know a definition for such terms, but to follow along with this audiobook you need to understand them and how they interact.

I gave up with five hours remaining. Titles for the 177 chapters may have helped, but probably not. Maybe I'd get more out of the paper version, where I can take my time and make notes.

Probably informative if you have a reasonable grasp of economics basics

I wasn't too sure about this book to start with but I'm glad I listened to the end and will prob listen again. It taught me a lot about the world economy and covered many interesting aspects from a variety of situations. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

interesting look at the world economy

This book does exactly as it says- gives an insight to global economics but in a non technical/jargon way. I love the style and performance of Pippa and get the sense that this is someone who cares deeply about her subject and the need to educate and explain without peddling a strong viewpoint other than her positive message of growth and innovation. It lacks the doom and gloom predictions of some authors and is all the better for it. As I read this book I quickly thought my teenage kids needs to read this and found myself asking test questions on it - when women buy more handbags than shoes what does that tell you? Why would a monk throw a brick? What would you write in a letter to the queen to explain why no one foresaw the 2008 financial crisis? The truth is this is a book that I'd recommend to all teenagers and adults alike. I loved it from beginning to end.

A compelling, entertaining and thought provoking view of global economics

Comparatively small indicators can reveal truths that evade economists and experts and predict and signal monumental economic and political change. Everyday things that go unnoticed at the time but with the benefit of hindsight are perfectly prophetic. Question is, once we aware of this fact, can we predict the future? This and the history of the world and how factors shape our reality explained.
