Summary
The Zephyr makes the journey from New Madrid to New Orleans in late 1861. A year later, the Zephyr reaches Cairo, Illinois, and is greeted by Union gunboats. The war is now on the water, and there is little room for river commerce.
When Cory learns that a Union force under Ulysses S. Grant is advancing toward the forts to claim the area for the North, Cory and his crewmates must choose sides and join in the fight to see which side will control the river.

Excellent Historical Fiction
On par with Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden for historical fact, good flowing story.

gets better each book
as a brit I only know the US civil war through old films and tv, this series so far, though fiction, has filled in a lot, the lesser known battles of forts Henry and Donaldson, and countless skirmishes.
book 2 features mainly Cory Brannon out West, who is drawn into the conflict aboard a riverboat up the missisippi to the tennesee river.
blending fiction and history is difficult, but the research shows through really well, and the story flows keeping you enthralled and eager for more.
the narration is good and has a respectful tone, but alive in battles and vocal characterization.
on to book 3, Antietam

Captivating and engrossing Civil War drama
The second brilliant story in this epic saga following one Virginia family amidst the blood and upheaval of the Civil War. Very well told by the excellent narrator.
