Henry Donelson, Sohn des Major vom 11. Lancier-Regiment zu Bombay, bittet Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe. Der Major brachte eines Tages von seiner Reise aus Indien, zwei Diamanten mit. Einen schenkte er seiner Tochter, den zweiten seinen Sohn. Als der Major verstarb, beauftragt der Sohn, Henry Donelson, seinen Vetter, den Stein schätzen zu lassen und gegeben falls zu veräußern.
