Summary

There is a persistent and incorrect idea, reinforced by countless film misrepresentations, that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were always staid and dull British chaps of middle years (or older), with Holmes a spry, cranky, and impatient eccentric, and Watson a white-haired and portly Boobus Brittanicus, a la Nigel Bruce. Students of the true and Canonical Sherlock Holmes know this to be a falsehood.

When we first meet them on January 1, 1881, Holmes is still 26 years old (although he will turn 27 in just a few days), and Watson, already a wounded war veteran, is only 28. During the three-year period between early 1881 and late 1883, through all of the early adventures which cemented their lifelong friendship, Holmes was still in his twenties, with Watson just a little over a year older. This idea is difficult for many to accept as they cling to the image of our Heroes as senior citizens.

This volume is an amazing collection of some of Holmes and Watson’s fascinating cases that occurred during those first three years in Baker Street, when Holmes was creating his unique profession of consulting detective, while Watson was still recovering from the war wounds that he’d received in Afghanistan and slowly returning to the business of being a civilian doctor. Included are 31 new stories in three companion volumes by some of today’s best Sherlockian pasticheurs, as well as an excerpt from the beginning of "A Study in Scarlet", detailing the initial meeting of Holmes and Watson in early 1881, as well as possibly the most famous Canonical tale, "The Speckled Band" (occurring in April 1883) and "The Resident Patient", with its original restored opening text, as it first appeared in The Strand magazine, indicating that this adventure occurred toward the end of the first year of Holmes and Watson’s residency at 221B, Baker Street.

Join us as we climb the 17 steps to our heroes’ sitting room. You’ll find that they haven’t lived there quite as long in these early days, and possibly they aren’t as quite as old as you might have pictured them....

Good but

I loved the new stories but filling in with ones written by ACD which are already known I felt was taking a liberty so some stars knocked off.

Some better than others

This is a nice selection of short stories. Due to multiple authors some stories are better than others but most of the stories are fun and quick.

Great collection of short stories

This is so interesting and as the series continues Holmes is developing into what I normally associate with him. What I like about this series is that there a mix of short stories so that I can stop and then go back.

When I first started listening to this series I never thought I would enjoy it so much, I would take a chance and listen. I just love how they solve the mysteries.

The narration so suits the story.

I was given a free copy via the book club audible listeners but the review is entirely my own.

Various Collection

This is a carry on from volume 11 a good mixed bunch some I've heard before and some have been televised a long time ago but it did not put me off I could listen to these stories often. Some short just right to listen before sleeping and some longer but in the listing, they have put an approx timeline on the story which helps.

Superb Listen

Having already listened to Volume 1 and 2 I was excited to listen to Volume 3. I was not let down. The stories are of equal quality to the previous volumes. Absolutely first class. You cannot differentiate between the writer’s for quality of the story. This is a must read for any Sherlock Holmes fans or anybody else who likes a good story. I am looking forward to volume 4 already.
The audio book would not have been the same without the great narrator.
Full disclosure. I was given this book free of charge for an honest and unbiased review.

Wonderful

I love the Sherlock Holmes stories, there is always something unexpected but at the same time rather comforting about this extraordinary detective and his companion Dr Watson. This collection of stories is no exception, I enjoyed them so much I am listening for a second time!
