Sometimes the truth hurts more than it helps.
When Deena Sharpe, 59, loses her long held position as high school teacher, she quickly becomes bored with her retirement and instead decides to try her hand at journalism. After a slow start, she learns of the discovery of a skeleton in an old evidence box, labelled Jane Doe, dating back to 1964. Sent for forensics and a facial reconstruction, this very cold case has many surprises.including a connection to Deena's own family. She promises her grandmother that she will try to find out what happened.
A really fun detective story with Deena and friends digging into the past, and discovering more about the family history than was comfortable. Numerous twists in the investigation and relationship interaction set in a Texan small town with all of it's gossip and prejudices, this makes for an enjoyable, and sometimes infuriating, read. The narrator is Kelley Hazen, whose deliciously intoned voice and Texan accent is a joy to hear. Always well paced and cadenced, she reads the text with warmth and gives individual voice to each of the numerous protagonists.
This is a quick and easy read with a good story line and a cast of often colourful characters.And is the first book in a series of Maycroft Mysteries.

Humorous start to a fantastic series
Just as life gets a little dull for newly retired Deena Sharpe, an over 50 year old case is reopened when a skeleton is found in the evidence closet at the police station. Turns out the skeleton is Deena's Uncle and her Grandmother wants Deena to investigate. A famous conspiracy author is on the case too, though he has his own ideas on what might have happened. With the help of her family, old students, a few treasures in an old chest and other bits and pieces, Deena may have found her calling!
I really enjoyed how this book was written and narrated. It is funny and interesting and even before the audience realises it, the mystery has been solved and the audiobook is done. Luckily there are plenty more opportunities to visit Maycroft and to solve mysteries with Deena Sharpe.

Brilliant
I loved this book, amazing characters and brilliant storyline. I highly recommend this book. And I look forward to the next one.
