About this listen

4th May, 1970. President Nixon has ordered American ground forces into Cambodia. By the end of the day four students will be shot dead in the grounds of Kent State University.

On the other side of the Atlantic, maverick psychiatrist Dr Zack Busner has been tricked into joining a decidedly ill advised LSD trip.

Five years later, sitting in a nearby cinema watching Steven Spielberg's Jaws, Busner realizes the true nature of the events that transpired on that dread-soaked day.

Big Will Self fan here. Shame he doesn't read all of his own audiobooks - too much to expect I suppose. However, the guy reading this I find unbearable. Get ready for a menagerie of silly voices, emphases, intonations and mock glottal stops. He's like an actor trying to upstage everyone else on stage except he's forgotten he's doing a one-man show. Thing is, it's not supposed to be a 'show' at all, he's reading a book ffs. It's as if it is read by a parrot that has been owned by a flat share that included Norman Wisdom, Nina Hagen, Stephen Hawking and The Young Ones.

Extraordinary Rendition

I especially enjoyed this on audible because Will's writing can be difficult for me to maintain when reading.
Of course I love Jeanie, and using the Philadelphia Association as a literary container for characters works well .

laughed out loud

Self's powerful, brutally wry and multi-layered novel is stunningly narrated here by Jonathan Keeble.

Brilliant

Will Self 'difficult' books are shown in their true light by audio renditions, packed with humour, satire and deep insights into the human condition...in my opinion Will Self can not be rated too highly.

Ideal for audio
