Summary

As he teetered on a narrow rock ledge, a yak's bellow short of the stratosphere, with a rubber mask strapped to his face, a pair of mittens the size of a sea lion's flippers, and a drop of two kilometres below him, it's fair to say Mark Horrell wasn't entirely happy with the situation he found himself in.

He had been an ordinary hiker who had only read books about mountaineering. When he signed up for an organized trek in Nepal with a group of elderly ladies, little did he know that ten years later he would be attempting to climb the world's highest mountain.

But as he traveled across the Himalayas, Andes, Alps, and East Africa, following in the footsteps of the pioneers, he dreamed up a seven-point plan to gain the skills and experience which could turn a wild idea into reality.

Funny, incisive, and heartfelt, his journey provides a refreshingly honest portrait of the joys and torments of a modern-day Everest climber.

Everest at it’s best

The narrative set out from the very beginning was engaging and “can you climb Everest’?
Subtle historic events filled with stories and antidotes keeps you poised and turning the page. Not a big book reader myself, however this was a book I did not want to put down.
Thank you Mark Horrell for your story.

Very relatable

Mountaineering books are most often written by superstars of the climbing world or professional adventurers. This one is different, it tells the story from an everyman perspective - a guy that started from simple hillwalking and ended up on top of Everest. The author took a commercial expedition route to achieve this, which again makes it very relatable. If me or you wanted to do something like this (provided we had the guts and stamina required) this is how we would most likely do it.
I really liked author's attitude to climbing - lets take it as far as we can while still enjoying it. No pressure to get "the result", no going beyond what's individually possible to prove a point. In this case it worked out so well done for taking it to the top. Many people with a similar dream will not be able to achieve it even if they did everything in their power to do so. And that's ok too. Only go as far as you can still enjoy it and come back alive. 100% agree with the observations in the epilogue.

Excellent story for the amateur mountain lover

was a really well written journey of discovery of the mountains. The writer comes across as a humble, humerous and warm hearted adventurer and I was enthralled the entire way. Slight annoyance with the number of obscure metaphors thrown in but only very slightly. the narrator was decent but I think he needs to remove the constant need to practice his accents, the one with Tenzing Norgay coming across as welsh was hilarious!

Inspiring and honest

Mark told a great story about the challenges of high altitude climbing. He makes the journey seem possible for anyone to do if you do it the correct way.

Armchair Adventurer

I have read all of the books mentioned and seen the films. I am in awe of the journey Mark took to finally reach the summit of Everest. I have a dream to see the Himalayas, not to climb anything but just to see the Mountains. I am inspired to make my dream come true.
