About this listen

In this landmark work on a subject too often dismissed as paranormal or disreputable, Jeffrey Meldrum gives us the first book on Sasquatch to be written by a scientist with impeccable academic credentials. He gives an objective look at the facts in a field mined with hoaxes and sensationalism.

Meldrum reports on the work of a team of experts from a wide variety of fields who were assembled to examine the evidence for a large, yet undiscovered, North American primate. He reviews the long history of this mystery - which long predates the "Bigfoot" flap of the late 50s - and explains all the scientific pros and cons in a clear and accessible style.

Anyone who has pondered the mysteries of human evolution will be fascinated and eager to join Dr. Meldrum in drawing their own conclusion.

Whilst this is definitely due an update, the wealth and depth of evidence Professor Meldrum clearly and concisely presents here shows why he doesn't call himself a believer. There's no need for belief when you understand the wealth of evidence that exists to show that there are definitely living beings out there which are neither human nor apes, and have been known to Indigenous people for millenia.

A thorough analysis

Thoroughly informative, interesting and educational even for those with extensive knowledge/interest in the topic. I greatly enjoyed the in-depth evaluation of evidence I was both already familiar with and 'new' to me, and it answered a lot of lingering questions from the multitude of documentaries I've watched over the years.

A solid history of the Bigfoot through the eyes of science

Brilliant from start to finish.
Taking a scientific look at the Sasquatch phenomenon.
It would appear there are huge huminiod beings in the wildernes of North America!

Excellent

Very interesting read. I read this as an interested sceptic, and by the end of the book have become convinced that such a creature is plausible.

Excellent book

the text may be 15 years old, and an update is required, but the scientific analysis is excellent

a very scientific analysis that convinced me

Wanting to branch out a little in my reading repertoire, I happened upon this book dealing with a subject, some even say a paranormal one, of the evidence behind the existence of a hitherto unknown great ape, otherwise colloquially known as "Big Foot" or Sasquatch.

This book deals with the subject matter in a disciplined, scientific and structured way. The formality of the prose is perfectly complemented by the narrator, a man who could quite easily narrate a history channel documentary.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this book. I think I was looking for a little more colour, as it were. This book is rather dry and analytical, no bad thing for sure, but I think for the mass market the detached analysis might have been a little more interesting if interspersed with the best of the anecdotal evidence by means of encounters and sightings. Having said that, this book does indeed include such accounts, but they are sporadic and sparse, and a considerable portion of the book is focused on perhaps the most famous video evidence, the Patterson-Gimlin film. I do accept that this one Big Foote film has received the most rigorous analysis over the years and therefore completely understandable as to why so much time is spent on it. However, I'd like to have had far more video footage included. Even withstanding the original published year of this book, I'd imagine there must be equally good footage available, perhaps better with the advent of superior video equipment in the hands of ordinary people, to be considered.

I did have to skip certain sections of the book and did feel that some of the points were dealt with more than once, such as the analysis of footprints.

If you're strictly looking for a scientific based handling of the subject matter, then this is a book worthy of your time. It's quite rigorous and reads like a forensic report much of the time, so be prepared for a somewhat technical read. Given the aim of this book, my observation isn't a criticism, just something to point out for those casual readers looking to learn more about the subject, but in a slightly more accessible and less formalized format.
