È il 19 agosto del 2008. C'è il sole a Pechino. Nello stadio olimpico a forma di nido si corre la quinta batteria dei 200 metri donne. La prima a tagliare il traguardo è la giamaicana Veronica Campbell Brown in 23"04. L'ultima è una ragazza di 17 anni, alta e magra, con i pantaloncini lunghi fino alle ginocchia, una fascia tergisudore sulla fronte e le scarpe regalatele da un'atleta della squadra sudanese. Chiude in 32"16.

"È stato molto bello" dice. "Farò del mio meglio per non essere ultima la prossima volta". Quella ragazza si chiama Samia Yusuf Omar. Ha diciassette anni ed è l'unica atleta somala a partecipare alle olimpiadi.
