About this listen

Stumbling over a dead body is one hell of a way to start a vacation....

While growing up, Hawk was always the wild card, the one who couldn't sit still or find a place to belong. Becoming a SEAL gave him a niche and a purpose in the world like no other. Nevertheless, the wild man remains under the surface, waiting for the match to his flame. Ending up back home for a few days' R&R, Hawk notices a new, darker element has moved in next door - and, at least in part, it appears to involve a freckle-faced redhead from his past, the girl he never forgot.

Mia remembers her best friend's brother from her childhood only too well. What girl in her right mind could forget Hawk? As a boy, he'd been 24-7 fireworks, lighting up her life. Every encounter with him took her breath away and made her heart beat too fast. But Hawk, the man, home for a holiday, is harder, dangerous - and impossibly sexier than he'd been when she was just a star-struck kid longing to catch his eye.

Even as Mia is swept off her feet by her teenage-crush-turned-grownup-acute feelings for him, the town is hit by unprecedented violence…and Mia's smack-dab in the middle of the explosion.

Good story, but the narration was a let down. DH occasionally seemed to forget the character's gender, lightening his voice for men and deepening it for women. On several occasions, he called Hawk 'Hank', which initially left me wondering who the new character was before I realised what had happened.

It's hard to suspend disbelief about the sheer number of times Mia is kidnapped, but it was the same in 'Mason' and almost feels like an inside joke at this point. Smiling isn't a normal reaction, but I couldn't help it by the 3rd time and it didn't detract from my enjoyment.

Things move very quickly, which isn't surprising for such a short book. It would have been nice if the relationship had been developed a bit more and they'd taken the time to talk. They really only spent a short time together between kidnappings and, while they thought a lot about each other, they didn't talk to each other!

Good story, but problems with narration

Brilliant narration from Daniel Henning

While visiting his sister Eva, Hawk discovers a robbery in progress and a murder. The town is also having deal with looting. One of the places is the general store the father of Mia’s father, Mia is the best friend of Eva. Hawk’s gun case was in the store and all have been taken.
A lot more is going down, Hawk contacts his team when chemicals, bomb making equipment and guns are found hidden in caves located around Gordon’s home.
Hawk and his team become into play when Mia and her father are kidnapped by men determined to sell arms and other weapons to terrorists.

Action, drama and romance.
