Dawn. 19th July 1972. A force of nearly 300 heavily armed, well-trained guerrillas launches a surprise attack on the small fishing village of Mirbat. All that stands in their way is a troop of just nine SAS, aided only by an elite band of fighter pilots overhead.

Two years earlier, a Communist rebellion had threatened the Arabian Peninsula, in the strategically critical Sultanate of Oman. Following a covert intelligence mission, 22 SAS deployed their largest ever assault force against the rebels.

But this was to be a bitter and hard-fought campaign culminating the Battle of Mirbat, which would become a defining moment for the regiment. Their heroism that day would remain part of the SAS legend for ever.

Another great account of a truly astonishing feat, as with Vulcan 607 and Phoenix Sqn. The level of research and detail is phenomenal and it is superbly put together into a gripping account. On top of this, the narration was truly first class.

It took me a few chapters to get into this book, taking in the names and hardware, vehicle details etc but, it was so worth sticking with it.

Ordinary people from ordinary backgrounds achieving the impossible against overwhelming odds. A great story of determination, but sadly proving the fact; "Politocians start wars, they don't fight them".

Really liked this book, tells a historic story using personal accounts, which in my mind not only brings the events to life, but makes it a fascinating read/listening. I am much more educated about the events in Oman thanks to this book.

It's OK but just seems to be a series of recollections of individual incidents without any cohesion whatsoever.

You're never quite sure what the overall purpose of the actions is or how these episodes are aligned.

Narrator's OK given the material which switches between adventure story and history.

I was thinking about getting his book on the Vulcan raids but I'm 50:50 on that now.

Probably the least enjoyable of Roland White’s books, particularly when compared to his powerful and page turning Vulcan 607 and Harrier 809 books. It just never gets going, being rather a jumbled rambling of memories of the period missing a much needed beginning, middle and end .. or even clear chapters covering phases and events. May be I just dozed off, either way disappointingly dull.

Probably on a par with Into the Black, though that, I recall, had more interesting Space Shuttle facts for me, but when I say I even enjoyed Phoenix Squadron more, that speaks volume!

I’m now debating whether to risk pre-ordering his latest book on the Mosquito. Considering how his later books have fared better, I probably will.
