About this listen
The Russian war effort to defeat invading Axis powers, an effort that assembled the largest military force in recorded history and that cost the lives of more than twenty-five million Soviet soldiers and civilians, was the decisive factor for securing an Allied victory. Now with access to the wealth of film archives and interview material from Russia used to produce the ten-hour television documentary Russia's War, Richard Overy tackles the many persuasive questions surrounding this conflict. Was Stalin a military genius? Was the defense of Mother Russia a product of something greater than numbers of tanks and planes-of something deep within the Russian soul?

smashing read and how time greed can again be seen to consume the land.
this book will be written again and again once my generation have turned to ashes. The read was brilliant the narrator was good and professional to say the least. It's not a book that is a good read it's harsh it's war and it's covered new aspects not covered and it also could be quoted verbatim with some of today's propaganda from the red square...

Solid, but showing its age
I got this because it is written by Richard Overy; a first rate military historian by any measure. But after listening to the introductory section, I knew I would be disappointed. This was written in the mid-90s; drawing upon the Perestroika and early post-Soviet revelations from the Russian archives and also the general goodwill towards the fledgling Russian democratic regime.
The world has moved on quite a lot since then. So as a result, this misses the subsequent scholarship that has revealed a ton of Soviet offensives that the Soviets airbrushed out of the war; mainly down to the monumental work of David Glantz. So operations against Rumania in 1944 and of course, Operation Mars are absent.
Not the book's fault, but makes it much less valuable than more recent accounts.
