Summary

In Sherwood Forest, wearing the Lincoln green, Robin Hood emerges as the most famous, compassionate, adventuresome outlaw in history. Arrows twang and thwack into targets, torturers whips pop and whistle, and horses hooves beat with a gallop that adds realism to an already well-told tale. McAndrew's gifted vocal range handles gender changes well and brings Lady Marion, Friar Tuck, and the Sheriff of Nottingham to life, making this a winner for junior listeners.

Slighty patchey take on a classic story

The writer has done a good job of adapting and abridging the various folk tales related to Robin Hood. All of the essential elements are here, the romance, the merry men, the fat friar, the evil sherif, the archery contest, daring rescues and clever escapes. The classic story is much better told then it was in the recent BBC TV drama or in the Kevin Costner film 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'.
But several elements let this production down.
The dialog between characters is very basic and not very interesting to listen to. The reader doesn't quite fit the material, he has a fairly soft voice and fails to bring much warmth or depth to the characters or to differentiate between some of them. Epic classical music squalls in the back ground during the most dramatic moments and his voices sounds a little silly over it. I ordered this on the strength of the brilliant Naxos Childrens production of King Arthur and I found it very disappointing in comparison.
Based on it's own merits this audio book is a good but patchey version of the classic story. Children who have not heard the story before will no doubt enjoy it a lot more then those who are familiar with it. I would recommend trying the audio preview before you download this, if you don't share my issues then you will probably find little to fault with this.
BTW: I down loaded several Naxos children's classics and it worked out cheaper then buying the CDs 2nd hand from Amazon (after P&P). If you want audio books in this series audible is definitly the place to get them.
