Summary

Redeye Fulda Cold by Bill Fortin is a first in series of a "MASH-like" war stories. Set in 1969 West Germany; the deployment of the newly developed Redeye ground to air missile system is brought to bear inside the 3rd Armored Division’s 1st/48th Infantry Battalion. The Redeye technology would play a very important part in thwarting the coming Russian invasion of Western Europe.

Rick Fontain, the main character, is drafted by his friends and neighbors just out of high school. He had been employed by the Bell System for just over a year. Made available by his 1A classification Rick is enters the US Army in April 1968. A series of aptitude tests during that first week marks him for a series of projects being hosted by the CIA. Author Bill Fortin deftly combines a multitude of very likeable fictional characters with some of the actual operators he met along the way.

This very inspiring tale inside a very Cold War takes the men of the 3rd Armored Division though a series of history making operations. Carefully crafted CIA planning provides the pause necessary and ultimately prevents a nuclear showdown with Russia. The infamous Fulda Gap becomes the center stage of the action.

The success of operations like Fulda Cold have changed our world forever...

1 person's droll & intriguing time in the cold war

What an interesting book. As it began I decided I couldn't keep up with the dates, I'd let them wash over me. The same idea was ascribed to the initials. That decided I could easily concentrate on the content To begin with I wasn't sure if I was bored or really interested but definitely didn't want to stop listening. Gradually the book revealed itself to be droll and and unusual. I was fascinated with the way it developed and explained aspects of the cold War that are a bit of a mystery. I was sad when it finished . Definitely worth sticking with, if your understanding of the cold War is as murky as mine, it is a great way to have this information explained, albeit a limited, one person's experience.
