About this listen

The hotly anticipated epic and phenomenal West-African inspired finale to the New York Times best-selling fantasy Raybearer.

Earphones Award Winner

For the first time, an Empress Redemptor sits on Aritsar's throne. To appease the sinister spirits of the dead, Tarisai must now anoint a council of her own, coming into her full power as a Raybearer. She must then descend into the Underworld, a sacrifice to end all future atrocities.

Tarisai is determined to survive. Or at least, that's what she tells her increasingly distant circle of friends. Months into her shaky reign as empress, child spirits haunt her, demanding that she pay for past sins of the empire.

With the lives of her loved ones on the line, assassination attempts from unknown quarters, and a handsome new stranger she can't quite trust, Tarisai fears the pressure may consume her.

In this finale to the Raybearer duology, Tarisai must learn whether to die for justice...or to live for it.

Critic reviews

"Joniece Abbott-Pratt makes a triumphant return to narrate this thrilling sequel to Raybearer." (AudioFile Magazine)

the story is gripping and beautiful, but the change in narrator is a little jarring. First couple of chapters were a struggle, but it got a lot better toward the middle. Worth a listen.

they changed the narrator

I preferred the narrator of the first book. Once I got wrapped in the story, I was hooked. loved it

love the story.

Another great story and brilliant ending to the series. It did take some time to get used to the change of narrator and some pronunciations but that’s just because I started this straight after the first one ended.

Spoilers below:
The book feels a bit slow while Tar is trying to assemble her council but after we get into the Crocodile subplot it’s much more interesting. It does get a while before we see the Underworld almost at the end and that goes past very quickly.

A fitting ending to the story

Sequels rarely measure up to the original but this one did. The conclusion to Tarisai’s story. I wanted to finish this book just to see how it concludes, but I wanted to savour it. Draw out the ending as much as possible because I didn’t wanna part ways with this exciting story, and these beautiful characters. I loved every moment of it.

A worthy sequel!

I really enjoyed this although I preferred the narrator for the first book - the American accent in this one didn’t appeal to me at first but it is a testament to the quality of the storytelling that I soon forgot! Thoroughly recommend these two books.

A fitting end to the story

Loved the story and only wish that there was more world building and more time spent in building the tension.

Captivating story with a satisfying conclusion.

I would have really enjoyed it more if the same narrator as the first book read this. It missed the same charm and flow.

Great story! Narration however . . .

The descriptions transport you to another world and time. Beautifully read. Sorry when it ended. “Do more!”

I loved Raybearer and found it very original and surprising. unfortunately I felt a bit disappointed by Redempyor. I feel the story was mostly predictable, we did get a bit more world building and side character development but I would have expected way more from a second book. As a result it l lacked a bit of depth. I almost think Raybearer would have been fine as a standalone without the whole redemptor storyline I have to say.

still fun/enjoyable but didn't live up to Raybearer

I truly loved these books, but I really felt the loss of Weruche Opia in this one. I'm sure I wouldn't have felt it as much if Abbott-Pratt had narrated Raybearer, but the radical change of accent, dictation and pronunciations really left me wanting.

Great book, but dearly missed the old narrator!
