About this listen

Where do the best ideas come from?

And how do we apply these ideas to the problems we face - at work, in the education of our children, and in the biggest shared challenges of our age: rising obesity, terrorism and climate change?

In this bold and inspiring new book, Matthew Syed - the bestselling author of Bounce and Black Box Thinking - argues that individual intelligence is no longer enough; that the only way to tackle these complex problems is to harness the power of our 'cognitive diversity'.

Rebel Ideas is a fascinating journey through the science of team performance. It draws on psychology, economics, anthropology and genetics, and takes lessons from a dazzling range of case-studies, including the catastrophic intelligence failings of the CIA before 9/11, a communication breakdown at the top of Mount Everest, and a moving tale of deradicalization in America's deep South.

It is a book that will strengthen any company, institution or team, but it also offers many individual applications too: the remarkable benefits of personalised nutrition, advice on how to break free of the echo chambers that surround us, and tips on how we can all develop an 'outsider mindset'.

Rebel Ideas offers a radical blueprint for creative problem-solving. It challenges hierarchies, encourages constructive dissent and forces us to think again about where the best ideas come from.

A Game Changer

We are all aware of the calls for diversity & inclusion but the way it is demanded & legislated has turned many business people into sceptics. Their scepticism and inaction often increases the requirement for tick boxes and ever more activism.
Matthew Syed clearly lays the case for cognitive diversity through evidenced science and case studies.
Reading this book & implementing its ideas will significantly increase the wealth of your company and the intelligence of your organisation.

I had to listen hard...

A thought provoking book which was well worth a listen to and certainly makes you think about the true meaning of diversity! I found on numerous occasions having to rewind a little as I may have got distracted and missed some detail, but great stories/examples to bring to life the contents. I'm now going order the book too so I can dip back in and out of for work.

to be read by anyone

Surely one of the most interesting and thought provoking books out there. I have enjoyed it and would recommend anyone to read it.
I did not agree with everything, as everything is viewed through the scientific eye and that is rather limited, especially when dealing with human behaviour.
I would recommend The Religious Sense from L Giussani for a more in depth view to explain some behaviours.
Surely this book helped me document the importance of diversity

thought provoking insight

there is a reason this book was the chartered management institute book of the year in 2020. the insight for leaders navigatig out of covid would do well to listen and apply some of the principles contained. To create stronger and more resilient organisations.

fascinating and enlightening

I've studied Psychology and team dynamics so had some background on this topic, but Matthew Syed brings the evidence from multiple fields of research together in a clear, logical and exciting narrative that would be accessible to listeners who are brand new to diversity science. There are so many applications of these ideas to business, sport, media and daily life. Everyone should read this! Especially people who are unconvinced about the case for diversity.

Thought provoking

I’ve read all Matthews books and always learn something new. This book gives a compelling argument for diversity, far above the general PC ‘diversity box ticking’ that most organisations engage in

Extremely well researched and backed up with examples and studies, as all Matthews works are. Thought provoking & highly recommended
