These were the words uttered by leader of the Utopia mission, Admiral Harry Ransome, in the year 2342. It was the last transmission he ever sent. 150 years later, he is discovered on a distant frozen planet, very much alive having barely aged a day.

This story tells the tale of what happened to Harry Ransome between the sending of that fateful message and the end of 'Horizon.'

Fortunately, I acquired Horizon, Ransome and Emergence by D. W. Adams, at the same time. I was intrigued by the premis of the book series and thought it would be worth a shot. I'm so happy I did as I could binge on them, one after the other. I was not disappointed.
Ransome takes us back to what lead to the horrible mess humanity finds itself in as described in Horizon (book 1 in the series). To say it's a convoluted path is putting it lightly. Adams has very intelligently plotted a very credible, albeit horrifying, timeline and cascade of events. It's a compelling read that leads you into the mindset of a character you might not have thought much of in Horizon. Harry Ransome is of course, pivotal to the whole narrative, you see the human side of him and not just the one easy to loath.
Drusilla, the perfidious main female character also has a more "human" side and we can appreciate where she's coming from.

I'm enjoying these books in Audible so I must mention the 5⭐ performance of Brandon J. Peterson who has a captivating voice and shows off a great agility in jumping from the voice of one character to another. His interpretation of female characters is "spot on". Not trying to make us believe he's a woman (which makes me cringe!), but softening his voice enough to let us know it's a female character.

I love Horizon so reading it's companion novel, Ransome, was a no-brainer. It connects the dots between Horizon and Emergence perfectly, and expertly combines vibes from.the Star Trek and Alien franchises in its own unique way. The narrator did an excellent job and the sound effects add to the atmosphere as intended. Unquestionably recommended reading for sci-fi horror fans!
