Unter den russischen Immigranten im New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn geht die Angst um. Ein Unbekannter tötet im Schutz der Dunkelheit die Freunde und Anhänger des Zaren. Als es auch einen ehemaligen Schüler von Professor van Dusen trifft, nimmt dieser mit Hilfe seines Begleiters Hutchinson Hatch die Ermittlungen auf. Die blutige Spur führt nach Coney Island, in den noch im Bau befindlichen Vergnügungspark Dreamland. Dort kommt es zu rasanten Begebenheiten, bei denen die Grenzen zwischen Fantasie und Realität zu verschwimmen scheinen.
