About this listen

THE PHENOMENAL INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER – 3 MILLION COPIES SOLD

The iconic bestseller Prisoners of Geography, now fully updated with brand new content to reflect the changing global geopolitical landscape since it was first published in 2015

‘One of the best books about geopolitics you could imagine.’ Evening Standard

Prisoners of Geography is the book people need to understand what’s happening in the news today, from China’s ambitions to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Bestselling author and geopolitics expert Tim Marshall looks at the past, present and future to offer crucial insights into one of the major factors that determines world history – because if you don’t know geography, you’ll never have the full picture.

This completely revised and updated edition brings the classic text up to date with the events and trends of the past decade, with new material including:

• the Russia–Ukraine war and Moscow's alliances with authoritarian states
• the conflicts in the Middle East
• China’s growing military and strategic power, and its stance on Taiwan
• American global power and pivot to the Pacific
• Europe’s leaning towards more extreme politics, increased defence spending, and the new ‘Iron Curtain’
• Japan's remilitarisation and increasing power
• great power play in Africa
• the growth of Indian economic and military strength

Listen to Tim Marshall’s geopolitical primers (Prisoners of Geography, The Power of Geography and The Future of Geography) to understand what’s happening in our fast-changing world.

I did enjoy this in my daily walks. I found the narration excellent & the subject informative, thought provoking, but without being judgemental … and listening in May 25 upto date with the current global environment.

Informative without being overtly judgemental and well narrated

Was well produced. Interesting take on the world. Enjoyed listening. Obviously has a lot of insight to how big decisions are made. Worth listening to.

This new edition is VERY up-to-date. Lots of references and explanations very recent events. However, some chapters are better than others. Chapters on Russia, China, India and the US, for instance, follow a coherent thread. I learned a lot! However I thought the chapter on Latin America was a bit descriptive and not very convincing on the whole. Still this is a very readable/listenable overview, and there are definitely bits I will come back to. I would think it's worth a listen even if you have already read the first edition

Bang up-to-date!

I was literally saying not long ago that I wish there would be an updated version of the book I love so much. Great that it is read by the author too. 🏆

For those seeking understanding of geopolitics and actions of countries that cannot be found in everyday news

Well-formulated without any stiffness, this is one of the best works and fresh air on the topic I have read in a long time - the best thing about the book is that it is welcoming to any reader. I really felt I got new insights into the sociopolitical geography of our world, a big plus is that it is so updated (reading May 2025).

One of the most well-written works on the subject.
