Summary
THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER
Edward Snowden, the man who risked everything to expose the US government’s system of mass surveillance, reveals for the first time the story of his life, including how he helped to build that system and what motivated him to try to bring it down.
In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it.
Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood, Permanent Record is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online – a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet’s conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor, Permanent Record is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

Informative and emotional story
I naïvely expected to jump straight in to the facts regarding Snowdens disclosure but once I realised the story is about him ,and rightly so, the book was really good beginning with his life and so his motives for his actions ,what he discovered over time and then eventually the action he took .
Usualy i listen to books at work on and off over time until compleat but this book Was only 2-3 sittings for me.
If had to find somthing negative about the book it would only be the narrator seemed to me to put emotion in to some parts that i didn’t feel Snowden would have felt in my opinion but only on a couple of occasions and it didn’t impact on my view of the book
Enjoy

Brave man & equally brave wife. A massive sacrifice which hopefully will be justified in the years to come. He has warned us.

Gee thanks Ed
Ed at the end of this book: now that you’ve downloaded and listened this book, you’re definitely on a list. Thanks for telling us at the END of the book!
I’m (mostly) kidding. Thoroughly human, gripping story about one man who found himself in a position of huge power with his ideals intact and decided to act, risking everything to follow his sense of right.

Totally Gripping
This is an extremely gripping audio book - well written and superbly narrated. In it, Snowden describes his life, upbringing and career and explains why he did what he did, whether you agree with his views or not. Snowden is undoubtedly very intelligent and passionate about what he believes in and this book prompts the reader into questioning their own beliefs on mass state surveillance.
What worries me is the pro-Snowden movement that this book encourages. We must not forget that there is a difference between mass surveillance and the abuse of power by the people that collect the data. All the surveillance programs that Snowden talks about stem from the events of 911 where 3000 people died in one day and mass surveillance helps prevent this happening again. Terrorists do not play by the rules and our governments must deal with this. We need to make a choice: living with mass surveillance or risk having many, many more 911-like attacks.
I know which I would prefer.
An outstanding book and well worth purchasing.
